Seeing someone suffering but u don't realize it until it's too late
I had a friend named Jim and I loved him like a brother
We looked alike, as though we had the same mother
For the longest time we were never separated
He was a loyal friend, completely dedicated

As time went by life reared it's ugly head
I had no time for Jim, career first instead
Jim's family left messages saying they were worried
They said he was different, always seemed so hurried

So i went to see Jim; He looked so strange it was almost funny
He was a shell of himself and all he wanted was my money
I couldn't believe this was my friend, thin with distant eyes
He could barely make eye contact and his words were surely lies

He said don't worry old friend everything with me is fine
He said so how about that money? I think we've run out of time
I gave him a fifty and we said we'd meet again next week
The days seemed so long worried so sick I didn't sleep

I woke the day of our lunch looking forward to seeing Jim
I arrived at the diner so looking forward to seeing him
But the hours went by with no sign of my friend
I was angry with my buddy and I couldn't pretend

I decided to confront him and headed for the train
The sight I saw at his house later filled me with pain
Police tape was all around it seemed a crime had occurred
All my efforts to see my friend so conveniently deferred

Then I saw his mother and my heart fell to my feet
I knew this was bad, her eyes I could barely meet
Jimmy is gone she told me though it seemed a blur
Am I hearing these words? Am I hearing them from her?

It was an overdose they say, a needle in his arm
The money I gave him did no good only harm
This addiction stole my friend Jim, my favorite guy
And it all seemed to happen in the blink of an eye
