A more rhythmic slam poem
The Rope

To look beyond the wall of shame
That’s the greatest sin
To see past affection’s greatest lie
Is what They took from Him
It was love He wanted and won on a whim

It was then that They said to run the race
And all He got was an unwanted taste
Of Their love for the chase
He would die for her, and they said great
But don't you want something more?

He gave his life and soul
They took His trust

He asked Them to tell things of love
And They told Him things of lust

He spoke to Her to tell the words born from other's mouths
They told Him he was strong and sure, but Her love began to doubt

“Undermine to understand, and stand under hope
But never lie a victim of love, and always tie a rope”

So He did, but it held Him back from Her
Each struggle tightened the knot
He jumped off the high horse They gave to Him
And He struggled to Her very spot

They counted Their blessings, it can be told
The blessings He traded
To grow a little cold
The wisdom he sought
for a bit of gold
What a fool, They thought
What a sorry soul

He didn't understand why She couldn't see
the things They told Him He would want to be
It was because They had got to His head
Changing the words and wishes He said

Almost there, almost seen
He called out, but there was no She
They laughed and laughed, that golden sheen
Of coin in pockets
Of false promises
Of sanity adrift at sea

They said the rope was an escape route
out of love gone unloved in spite
But He was too late to see the knot was a noose,
and He died on that very night.
