THE BREAKAWAY

John had the puck on his stick and one defenseman to beat
His legs pushed hard on the skates on his feet
The defenseman was big at least six feet in height
He nudged the puck left and then skated right
He pulled the puck in as he hit full stride
It faked the defender, he passed on the inside
He crossed the blue line into the O-zone
Their goalie was solid it was well known
He flip passed the puck forward to himself
To fool the goalie into thinking top shelf
He raised the heel of his stick to fire the puck
When he was smashed from behind by the force of a truck
He fell to the ice and crashed into the wall
The big defenseman laughed when the penalty was called
He looked to the ref to see what he got
The referee then signaled for a penalty shot
The goon smashed his stick and skated to the bench
John stood back up his teeth were now clenched
All eyes were on him he had time to think
At least 2,000 fans were here in the rink
John took a deep breath to help calm down
Katie was watching, the prettiest girl in town
God, please let me score he prayed in his head
He thought back earlier to what his coach said
The goalies 5 hole is his weakest spot
He then thanked the Lord for that timely thought
He skated then stopped where the puck lay still
On display at center ice. Time to show his skill
He pushed the black circle with the heel of his stick
He then skated on up and gave the puck a kick
Back to his blade as he strode towards the net
The 5 hole was closed he'd have to take what he could get

He skated to the left to come in from an angle
He drug the puck through his skates and then let it dangle
Cutting back towards the net to get the goalie to move
He deked left and then right ever so smooth
The goalie committed and dropped to his knees
John went backhand to forehand a bit of a tease
He looked for the 5 hole but decided to be bold
Ignoring his coach and what he'd been told
He got under the puck with the heel of his stick
Shot the puck towards the top of the net, hard and quick
The goalie reached out to stop it with his glove
But was just a bit late the puck was already above
Into the netting and the goal light flashed bright
The crowd had erupted, what a glorious night
He looked in the crowd hoping to catch a glimpse of Kate
There she was cheering in row 5 Wow this was great
He looked over at the defenseman and he was still pissed
John took off his glove and blew him a kiss
The crowd cheered again already up on their feet
But Kate didn't like that and sat down in her seat
John thought to himself he shouldn't be a showboat
But damn it felt good for a minute to gloat
He skated back to the bench his team giving fist pumps
All this excitement gave him goose bumps
He looked up at the rafters thanking God for his gift
He sat back on the bench awaiting his next shift
