It started out as carbon,
Deep beneath the earth
5 million years ago.
Squeezed into shape,
Heated until hard,
Harder than anything
As hard as my heart.

Then 2 million years ago
A volcano.
It brought up heat, fire, rock,
An explosion.
And with it a gem.
Something precious.

Layers of rock and dirt built up,
Then, 2 years ago,
Something precious unearthed.
Polished, cut, designed, and fastened.
Onto a ring.
Which I bought.

I nod and they lower it down,
Back into the earth.
Cover it with dirt.
And roses.
It belongs there.
You don't.
