How standards in western politics have changed. (I'm neither American nor political.)
The Evolution of American Politics

At first our politicians valued truth,
so Washington would never tell a lie.
The Founding Fathers fought with nail and tooth.
''For liberty and justice!'' came their cry.

If Davy Crockett had a selfish side,
he should have fled the siege of Alamo.
A saner man would quit and swallow pride;
instead, he grabbed his gun and faced the foe.

Yet when four score and seven years had passed,
the freedom won came sadly under threat.
Abe Lincoln rushed to stem the fracture fast;
to those who paid the price, we owe a debt.

But Watergate has public trust long lost;
Bill Clinton's fun and games came at a cost.
