Dear old gent loses the love of his life

Old Leafy Lane

There he strolls down Old Leafy Lane,

That grey stone church in the pouring rain.

A crumpled straw hat, a silver topped cane,

His worn-out face, a heart full of pain.

To that garden of stones, silent and still,

Blankets of crocus Scatter the hill.

Snowdrops cover the neat mound of grass,

Yellow forsythia in a gold stained glass.

He shares his thoughts with his long-passed wife,

That heavenly lady that once shared his life.

Under the yews, where he would stand,

With silver harmonica held in his hand.

There he starts playing "The Impossible Dream",

Whistles in between to this hypnotic theme.

Sad dreamy tunes, the rain turns to tears,

That special lady who shared all his years.

As I stand and watch, I swallow his pain,

That poor old gent in the pouring rain.

His brown leather brogues tapped on the ground,

Those dancing notes echoed round and round.

Revisits a thought of her forever young face,

That vintage wedding dress covered in lace.

Under the willow as the blue birds sang,

Arm in arm as the church bells rang.

Her face disappears into angel filled crowds,

Drifting further into fluffy white clouds.

The smell of her lavender hangs in the air,

As he gasps a breath as if she were there.

That lace wedding dress floats in the breeze,

Through musical clouds and green kissed trees.

As he blows a kiss and holds out his hand,

That true love for her, lights up the land.

Lost in the oceans of her piercing blue eyes,

Now she's an angel in the heavenly skies.

Each time he visits, he connects with her still,

That garden of stones, silent and still.

He smudges the rain from his pale tired face,

Removes his hat and retires with grace.

Leaves his heart on the black marbled stone,

Thoughts in his head as he walks home alone.
