Back in the Sixties

Back in the sixties we marched to a different drum.
We “bummed around,” traveled with an upright thumb,
Strummed guitars, and thought everyone was a “chum.”

We played vinyl albums that wore curious names.
The Beatles and the Rolling Stones both came to fame.
Broken or scratched records were a serious cause for blame.

The only DJ at any of our parties were the ones who sang.
And doing it poorly was OK if you were one of our gang
Whose members never smoked nor said worse than “dang.”

We gathered in packs because solitary wasn’t cool.
We never worried about stolen bikes or forming a car pool.
Driving your own “wheels” was the only way to get to school.

On Friday nights, girls did sleep-overs, the more the better,
We compared our beloved penpal and GI letters,
Painted our nails, oohed and aahed over letter sweaters.

Someone seen "French kissing" was obviously defiled,
And anyone out past midnight was just plain wild.
It was such a different world when I was a child.

It certainly wasn’t a better place way back then,
Although it’s true you could buy a lot in the five-and-ten,
But any dream a girl could dream was only filled by men.
