Children's poetry contest entry
While walking deep in the woods one day,
I came upon a small bear cub at play.
He asked if I wanted to come along,
And started singing the Little Bear song:

"I am a little bear, can't you see?
I am a little bear, wild and free.
We can be anything that we want to be,
So won't you come along and play with me?"

"That's a lovely song," I said with a smile.
He said, "Will you stay with me for awhile?
I get so lonely in these woods, dark and damp."
So we ran out of the woods and set up a camp.

It was much brighter here, for there were no trees,
So the sun beat upon us and there was no breeze.
"This heat is getting to be too much to bear,"
He pulled out an umbrella and said he would share.

"That's very kind of you," I said to the bear.
"But I'm late for a party. Oh, what shall I wear?
It was very nice meeting you, I want you to know.
But it's now very late, and I really must go."

"I understand", he said, his head hung low.
"Nothing I can do, if you really must go.
There's only one thing I ask in my sorrow:
Promise me you'll come back here tomorrow."

"Tomorrow it is!" I said, sporting a grin,
"I want you to know how much fun this has been!"
We said goodbye and I told him to be good.
He said he'd be as good as a little bear could.
