Flash Fiction entry, August 7, 2015
Ricky nestled the water-filled balloon into the pouch of the sling-shot with the precision of an expert. Denny and Kayla giggled nervously as they held the ends of the homemade weapon.

Ricky spent an entire month’s allowance on a six-foot piece of surgical tubing. His mother bought it for him at a medical supply house. His dad willingly helped him cut and make the weapon out of duck tape, wood scraps and a cloth “nest” for the balloons.

Ricky snickered softly and looked at Denny. “You know,” he whispered, “she will never see it coming.” The three twelve-year olds grinned sheepishly at each other and moved cautiously out from behind the sheltering Rose of Sharon bush on the edge of Ricky’s yard.

The target was in the yard next door, bending over her flower garden pulling weeds. Old Lady Bones was constantly grousing to Denny’s parents about the “tom-foolery” their son and his friends made in the neighborhood. It was time for revenge.

“Old fuddy, duddy,” Denny said to Ricky. Ricky put his finger to his lips. “Quiet,” Kayla whispered sharply. Denny pulled back on the “pouch” as his two friends dug in and firmly held the ends of the sling-shot. Once released, the water-filled missile flew in a high arch across the yard and landed with a splash next to their intended victim.

Old Bones whirled around in a crouch, her old eyes spitting fire and an evil grin on her wrinkled face. “Take that!” she screamed as she aimed a power-pressure wand in their direction. A high-pressured stream of water leaped from the nozzle and soaked the three children as they ran away.
