Vivien causes problems for Brian.
Chapter 29

I called round Vivien's house on Monday afternoon and parked my motorbike in the road outside. When Vivien opened the door I was surprised to see her in her dressing gown. She invited me in and greeted me with a hug. A hug that seemed more like a lovers' cuddle but I dismissed the thought thinking she had always seemed a bit forward. It was just her way and she probably didn't mean anything by it.

As if she sensed my discomfort she moved away. "Won't be a tick," she said and walked off to the kitchen.

I heard her open and then close her gas oven door as if she were checking on her dinner. She opened the far door that led to the bathroom and I heard the plop of the bath plug followed by the swirl of draining water. She came back into the living room and picked up a shoebox from behind one of the armchairs. "You can sit down, Brian."

The two armchairs had small piles of clothing neatly stacked on them. I sat down on the sofa and Vivien put the shoebox on the coffee table in front of me.

"I know my Tommy would want you to have these," she said.

I looked into the box expecting to see Tommy's football medals, his fishing trophies, or his watch. I looked at the cufflinks that I had never seen Tommy wearing, a photograph of Vivien, and some bits of household junk that would mean nothing to anyone.

"I'd only just got out of the bath when you knocked," she said.

"I'll get on my way then and let you get dressed."

"No, you're all right. It can wait. Anyway, I've put two pasties in the oven and you can have one before you go. I miss cooking for my Tommy and I get so lonely sitting down to eat by myself all the time."

I felt obliged to stay even though I had other things to do. I was also concerned because I had left a parcel on the carrier of my motorbike. The parcel contained a surprise gift I had bought for Lynn from one of the better stores in town and I was worried someone might steal it. The time was getting on and I knew Lynn would soon be leaving her work. I wanted to get away so that I could meet her when she arrived home.

Vivien walked to the sideboard and took out a pile of magazines. "Me and Tommy used to collect these. We'd sit for hours looking through them. I know some people think they're mucky but we saw no harm in them." She put them down on the coffee table next to the shoe box. "I'll just go and check on the pasties."

She walked off to the kitchen leaving me a bit unsure and bewildered. I looked at the pile of girlie magazines on the table and noticed the foreign words on the cover of the top one. I'm not going to look at them, I thought, and I looked around the room trying to keep my eyes on something else but I looked back at the books. I looked at one of the armchairs and pictured Tommy sitting with a cup of tea watching the football on the television. Again I looked back at the books. I picked one up and started to flick through it. I had seen men's magazines at work but the pictures were nowhere near as explicit as these. I was shocked that Vivien had magazines showing such hardcore pornography, and even more shocked that she was showing them to me as if it were a normal thing to do.

"Brian," Vivien shouted from the kitchen. "Do you want sauce?"

"No, thanks," I said and I hastily put the magazine back down again thinking she was coming back.

Vivien came into the room and smiled as she looked at the pile of magazines that I had been looking at and I realised that it was clear I had disturbed them. After putting the pasties on the remaining space on the coffee table she loosened her dressing gown belt and sat next to me. The rope belt fell off as she sat down and I noticed that every time Vivien reached over to take a piece of her pasty her dressing gown opened a bit more and her breasts were becoming exposed. She partly stood up and reached over to take a magazine from the pile.

"This was Tommy's favourite," she said. Her gown fell almost completely open as she sat back down and she made no attempt to cover herself. Her leg moved over slightly and rested against mine as she flicked slowly through the pages displaying the pornographic pictures to me.

I've got to go, I thought. I have to get the hell out of here before it's too late. I stood up taking an obvious look at my watch. "Oh, shit, I'm supposed to meet Kenny," I lied. "I'm late. I'd better get going." I picked up the shoebox and made my way to the door but Vivien was right behind me.

"Oh, don't go yet. You haven't finished your pasty."

"I don't really like pasties and anyway you know what Kenny's like. He'll get the right hump if I'm late."

"Kenny, he's always been a pain in the backside. Well, don't you forget about me. Tommy said that if ever anything happened to him, you wouldn't let me sit about alone and depressed. He said he could rely on you to make sure that I was all right. You can call round later tonight if you like."

"I can't tonight, but I'll keep in touch." As I stepped out onto the pavement I noticed some of the bakery girls passing on bicycles. One of the bakery buses was passing and some of the girls were looking at my highly polished motorbike and then looking at me. I knew Lynn would soon be passing and I didn't want her to see me at Vivien's house. I also wanted to get to Lynn's house before she arrived home anticipating her surprise and excitement at the gift I had bought her.

"Could you give me a kiss like Tommy used to when he went off to work? It would mean so much to me," she said, tying the rope belt around her waist as she spoke. I could see no harm in it. I felt safe now that I was out of her house and on the pavement. I pictured Tommy giving her a quick kiss on the cheek like I did with my mother sometimes when I left for work. I looked up the road to make sure that Lynn was not passing. I didn't want her to get the wrong idea. There was no sign of the Mini and I felt at ease. I reached over to kiss Vivien goodbye and her arms locked around my neck as she started a passionate embrace. I tried to pull away from her but she held me tightly. I turned my head away, dropped the shoebox, and was about to push her away forcefully when I heard a screeching wheel spin from a car's tyres. Vivien let go and I turned to see Lynn's Mini hurtling off down the road.

I rushed to my motorbike and putting all my weight on the kick-start lever, I pushed down hard and the motorbike engine roared into life. I did a U-turn across the road causing a car to brake fiercely as I sped off after the Mini. The Mini was crossing some traffic lights but the lights changed to red before I got to them and I knew I had to jump the lights or I would lose her. I slowed down as I passed the lights on red but then speeded up when I had cleared the junction. The car that I had forced to brake outside Vivien's house started to overtake me and I looked across and saw the police sergeant in the passenger seat, pointing to the kerb.

When I had eventually been allowed to go I continued up to Lynn's house but the Mini wasn't there. I rode back to Kathy's house and when Kathy heard my motorbike pulling up outside she opened the door. "And what the hell do you want?" she said as I walked up the path.

"Do you know where Lynn is?"

"Yes, I do. She thought that you might come up here so she went to meet her dad at work. Don't bother calling for her later because she doesn't want to see you again."

"Listen, Kathy, it's not how it looked."

"Go away, Brian," she said and slammed the door on me.
