Halloween Horror

Her body was found hanging on a fence. At first glance it was mistaken for a Halloween decoration, but on closer examination construction workers discovered it was very real. I wonder how many people drove by thinking, “Wow, that looks so real?”

In my hometown, people compete to come up with the best Halloween decorations. Some of them are fun and cute, others are downright gruesome, and there are many in between these two extremes.

It’s fun driving around town looking at the displays that took hours of work to erect, but I often wonder how many people are traumatized by them. For example, there is a smashed up truck with a bloody body dangling out of a window on one lawn. Surely, people who have lost a loved one in an accident must find it a horrible reminder.

This year my only decoration is a big happy Jack ‘O Lantern. I love this time of year, but sometimes you have to draw a line. When people are so desensitized that they mistake a woman’s body for a decoration, it’s definitely time to draw that line.
