Open the Gate and let the cat in or let the dog out.
A chain link fence
plus two hundred fifty billion years
of evolved antagonism
separate the pair.

The black cat,
her jewel studded pink collar glittering in the sun,
ambles along the outside of the fence
inches from the silver diamond shaped links.

The motley Pit bull,
measuring his steps to keep pace with the cat,
walks in silence
along the inside of the fence.

They stop beside the gate,
touch noses between the links of the fence,
they set on their haunches
gazing into each others eyes
then wait for someone
to open the gate
and let the cat in.

Author's Note: I originally had "and let the dog out" for the last line.
