The good and the bad of memories.
"We all know what memories can bring.  They
  bring diamonds and rust.” —Joan Baez (song)

Oh those good memories are like gems from the Earth;
as they sparkle, we stay well aware of their worth.
And like diamonds refractive to scatter the light,
when recalling is good, we are pleased with the sight.

Yet bad memories weigh like a wagon of stone;
they’re like nails on the board or a buzz on the phone.
Weather beaten and threadbare, they shiver until
our resistance goes down and we’re thoroughly ill.

It’s a bridge to the past our gray matter makes so;
to be sure, sore recall forces awful to flow.
Recollection can be like the rain on a rail,
causing much oxidation when bad thoughts prevail.

But the bridge can convey a much happier path;
all depends on the mood—much depends on the laugh.
We are pressured by pain and mistakes to be sure;
yet with positive pace, then a change can occur.

So essential the opposites living inside;
take a look—let it roll, let it be, let it ride.
Thus the matter of past is as sure as a knife;
management is the key for a happier life.

Yes the good can outweigh what has happened before
as the bad comes on stage for another encore.
Both the good and the bad in our minds is a must
because memories harbor both diamonds and rust.
