I stumble through my front door and go into my bedroom
Lookin' forward to a good night's sleep
I make the room dark as Tutankhamun's tomb
Then I lay there starin' at the ceilin'
Waitin' for my thoughts to stop freewheelin'
And the voice of my muse to stop her squealin'

Writin' 9 to 5, because for me there ain't no sleepin'
When the sun sets, the sandman don't come creepin'
My mind keeps creatin' plot scenarios
With antagonist that are nefarious
9 to 5 the words just keep on comin'
While the clock ticks the minutes and hours away
While my fingers on my computer's keyboard sway
Writin' about a protagonist who's with the CIA.

I see a glowin' pattern in the ceilin'
A yellowish phosphorescence that undulates from right to left
Like a prehistoric butterfly whose movements are swift and deft
I turn on my right side hopin' thoughts will stop their dancin'
But now I hear a noise that sounds like a herd of zombies advancin'
Across my shag carpet and into my brain gray kitchen

Writin' 9 to 5, because for me there ain't no sleepin'
When the sun sets, the sandman don't come creepin'
My mind keeps creatin' plot scenarios
With antagonist that are nefarious
9 to 5, when my muse is wide awake
There's nothin' else for me to do
Except turn on my laptop, type one thousand words or two
Hopin' that my mind and muse will permit a bathroom brake.
