Do you remember the song, My Favorite Things, from The sound of Music? Remembering your favorite things, people, events and places will make you feel better when you have the bloz. I had to reword it to not be sued. My "favorite thing story" takes place as a little girl. I had to wear red. Mom said that I would cry if I couldn't wear red. Grandma went to a garage sale in Beverly Hills and found some beautiful dresses. Mom told her that I wouldn't wear them as they aren't red. "She cries if she can't wear red." Grandma tells her, "If Kathleen wants to wear red, she will wear red." They got a pot, filled it with red dye and in went all the pretty "rich girl" dresses. I got to wear red. I would like to buy a red dress now. Julie |

A GHOST VISITS SALT LAKE CITY Miss X is telling the girls of the office a wild Halloween story, a true tale she claims. She lives in the childhood playhouse of a wealthy man, Mr. J. C. XX. You know he is famous somewhere now and that the story is strange. I am changing the identities to protect the guilty. She continues saying that the house is haunted. She takes a shower and suddenly the water mysteriously shuts off. She claims there are two ghosts, one a dog, as she and her husband occasionally hear the chain of the collar whiz through the small house. Relaxing on the front lawn of the small house, a strange man stops to talk. He asks, “Have you heard the ghost?” Knowing what the man is talking about, but pleading innocent, they ask, “What are you talking about?” “A young man was hit by a car here a couple years ago. The former tenant of the J.C. XX Playhouse claimed that there was a ghost. We figured it had to be that young man. They knew that he had a dog, as he had part of the leash, but they never found the dog.” The young couple is amazed at the story, admitting that they have experienced strange situations making them believe in a ghost. They added that they have heard the chain of a dog whiz through the small house. We all agreed that it is the perfect office Halloween Tale. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** Why do some people excel while others slack? Maybe it’s the thought of a vacation to see the sights above. There are several aspects surrounding motivation. One is the Hierarchy of needs. You remember from school the pyramid with physiological needs at the bottom, those basics we cannot be without like food and shelter. The second is safety; the third is social; then there is esteem or ego. In your job you want some sort of title and a good paycheck for luxuries. Bigger toys for bigger boys. At the top is self-actualization, doing things for the challenge or to help others giving the person a pat on the back, which is part of esteem. As we achieve each level, we go after the next. The expectancy approach to motivation has the belief that his or her effort will lead to the desired level of performance. The equity approach asks for a reward, people want to be treated fairly. This gives us the paycheck, the bonus, or the allowance for a child. This isn’t always possible, as the poor family cannot afford to give children an allowance. The person has to look toward the other approaches of motivation for compensation. Last we discuss the reinforcement approach. The general idea behind this, according to B. F. Skinner, is that the consequences of behavior influence the future. We repeat the behavior that has a good result. There are other approaches to motivation, but I like mine, a shiny Super Spritzer. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** INTRODUCTION I heard this story at a church meeting in Beverly Hills told by a Hollywood producer, author unknown. It’s a metaphor that has a lot of truth. There were three beautiful young princesses, all gowned in pink chiffon, and each wearing a tiara of exquisite jewels, diamonds, emeralds and rubies. Full of love they dance around merrily each waiting for their prince. Two handsome young men come, kiss two on the cheek and they dance off together leaving one princess alone and jealous of their love. Suddenly a handsome man comes noticing the young woman feeling sad and lonely. His name is Life. Admiring her he exclaims, “You are so beautiful, take off your crown.” “Oh, I mustn’t take off my crown. I am to wear it always.” Tempting her more with his charm he repeats, “But you are so beautiful. Take off your crown.” Then he adds, “I want to enjoy your golden hair. I want to touch it.” “Thank you, but my father, the King, told me not to take off my crown.” The man called Life is so handsome and charming that he captures her and has her completely mesmerized. She looks into his eyes and suddenly reaches to take off her crown, letting more of her hair fall to her shoulders. Suddenly Life’s voice changes to that of the Devil saying, “Ha Ha. You are a fool." He starts striking the young woman. The princess exclaims, "I thought you loved me." He only laughs and beats her to the ground leaving her to die. Then he coldly disappears like a gust of wind. Don’t take off your crown, as some men, still want the cake, but can’t help but try to eat it too. Maybe it’s a test. This is the year 2007 with the possibility of recovery, but don’t take a chance. A good man still wants his princess. This is from a Hollywood producer. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** This is a new column where you can ask questions. I must warn you that you may get a silly answer. A serious question though, will be handled with uptmost dignity, as my feelings are easily hurt. "Do under others as you would want them to do unto you." A STORY OF MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS Julie Caulfield loves history remembering a lesson long ago of Mary Queen of Scots. It is 1568 when she escapes from captivity, but is defeated at Langside and again placed in confinement after fleeing to England. Later, in 1586 a plot to assassinate Elizabeth I is discovered and Mary is convicted of having involvement in the plot. She is to be beheaded. Gowned in black she walks to the executioner, where her hair is first cut. The executioner doesn't want any mistakes. I know this was done for the guillotine in France. Because of her clothing with a huge collar, there is one more humiliating request. She is told to take off her gown. She mocks Elizabeth for underneath the black gown of mourning, she has on a bright red petticoat. She lost her life through execution. The morale of the story is you can't take the law into your own hands. She was held captive for years, but perhaps without the revenge, she would have deserved the thrown at the rightful time. Attempted murder, and especially murder, changes the roles giving sympathy to the Queen. Mary still lost in death. We have to find solutions to problems that even the score, or else turn the other cheek as in the Bible. The drastic solution of murder only creates a war. We study history to avoid mistakes, as it can repeat itself. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** Free Photos from http://www.bigfoto.com ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** A favorite hobby of mine is photography. Of course now we have digital cameras. I hope to have one soon, one with movies too. In high school my class was for still film photography. My favorite subject was my dog, a little black terrier named Purp. The picture above was for this class. Another picture had Purp wearing my father's hat with the word CAT for Catepillar. My teacher asked if the negative was in correct and I said yes, but when it was developed the word was TAC. Obviously, I couldn't tell the right and wrong sides of the negative. Photography and anything creative, such as writing and dress designing, captures my interest. Photography has so many paths to take: Photo journalism, advertising, children and pets, contests, magazines, art shows, family, or just a hobby. Not having my millions yet, I consider all of these. Try photography for a diversion. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** I have tried to escape the pink ghetto. The battle isn't over for me and it isn't over for the ladies reading. One slip and we are back typing the memos of, sometimes, a pertinacious and petulant jerk. One thing about being down though, there is only one way to go and that is UP. You must have good strategy for the ascent. I learned that if you can't get a promotion, from not having a Bachelor's degree, start your own small business. Become an entrepreneur. Think of your best talent, or an easy talent to obtain. It takes 20 years to become a concert pianist. Maybe you are an interior decorator, dress designer or wedding planner. Find your niche. Maybe you can't quit your day job for a while. If this talent is something you love, you won't mind two jobs for a year. Otherwise, it can wear you out; your life out of balance. Hopefully, the hard work and toil will all be worth it; you will have your better paycheck. Your mother will be proud. Your old bosses should be proud. You will drive down the street in your new Super Spritzer, proud as hell. Share some strategy with me. Good luck!! Julie ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** A new member of the Caulfield household is needed. What would be better than a tiny Chihuahua? As a writer at home, the TV isn’t company, without responses. Something alive and loving, that doesn’t get into your wallet, is needed. I once had a Llasa Apso. Barnie didn’t understand me working, jealous of the computer. I would look around to see him pulling the sheets off the bed. He was impressed when I printed something with no hands. A little dog would be a lot of company. The Chihuahua, the little guy above, is named for a Mexican town. Most say that they were reared by the ancient Aztecs or Incas. I was shocked to read that they may have been fattened and used for food. They reached America in the 19th Century and have been a hit with ladies ever since, not being heavy to hold. They are loved by both sexes, as I recall meeting a young man bubbling that his friend gave him a tiny Chihuahua puppy that fit perfectly on his hand. I hope to have one soon. We should have a Name Julie’s Puppy Contest. The winner, with the best name, gets a merit badge. Remember to come up with two or three names as they are pedigree. Send me your suggestion. Thanks. Of course, you know that Julie Caulfield is a reknown expert of history. Today we talk of the Battle of Greece in the year 479 B.C., as the Persian commander Mardonius is touted by the Greeks under Pausanius. Julie delves deeper into the past to completely concoct the reason behind this battle, as research takes time. It is always about a woman. The Persian commander Mardonius visits Greece to spot the beautiful Hanna, almost a goddes, divine in every way. She works closely with the Athenian Playwright Aeschylus. He had never met a woman of suburb intelligence and finds it attractive and intolerable at the same time. Being in command he had become the picture of conceit, always getting what he desires. The woman, Hanna, has her own plan; a slave to Mardonius is not part of it. She vamps the messenger sent by the ruler of Greece to get strategies from Aeschylus. She will escape by boat to Chrete. Losing the wise and beautiful Hanna enrages Mardonius causing him to order his men to concur Greece. Hanna, is unaware of the battle, now safe on the island. What is sad is that Mardonius admitted to his general, that he truly loved her. THE END Julie ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
