6.  The Art of Pondering as told by GrannyMID #668704

Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you'v been but also where you're going. Life is not a race, but a JOURNEY to be savored each step of the way.

I love the word "ponder" according to the Random House Webster dictionary, to ponder means too meditate. Reflect is a great word, but for me 'reflect' conotates light, briefly, to move on, to glance over. To ponder is different, pondering is not just your run of the mill thought, it is so much more, it is to reach deep within and really think about whatever it is you are pondering until you are satisified with the answer you get, even if no one else agrees with you, you are convinced that for you the answer is correct.

I love everything about this word, the way it sounds when I say it, (PONder), the way I feel when I hear it being said and the calmness I get when I am pondering. Ponder also means to meditate, but again this is different for me. I ponder many things, some things I ponder make sense and some don't. I love to ponder as much as I love hearing the word. It's awesome to ponder somethng and actually come to a realization or have an epiphany or actually find the solution you were looking for. I find myself pondering things that cause me to wonder why or what if.

For me there is an art to pondering. The best way to ponder is to light a scented candle, turn on some soft music, and sit quietly as you ponder on various topics, subjects or special moments. Pondering is relaxing and a great stress reliever. I guess pondering is a form of meditating but different. Find something to ponder and give it a try.

Ponder this quote!

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." --Mark Twain

If I might I'd like to add one more.

"Now that it is all over, what did you really do yesterday that's worth mentioning?" ~Coleman Cos

Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day! I have been blessed to see another beautiful day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it.

I woke up much earlier than usual this morning, after pouring myself a cup of coffee I went out on the balcony to read and enter my thoughts in my journal for today.

I began to reminisce about my childhood, I remember that school always started in September and we wore sweaters because it was cool and we needed them. I vividly remember hating the blue skirt, white blouse, blue cardigan with brass buttons and the blue and white saddle oxfords required by the school I attended. I remember that the State Fair of Texas was in October (I think it still is) but now it's a whole month instead of two weeks. Getting back to my original thought the reason this mattered is because we wore light weight jackets on our day to attend. The we/our I am speaking of are my siblings.

This propelled me into a state of wondering and from wondering to pondering. I don't know why, but I started to ponder on green grass in winter. In my childhood grass turned brown in winter, so what has changed from then to now, why is there green grass in winter? This naturally started me to think about global warming and on and on until these words popped out from this deep thinking."THE OBSTINATE GREEN GRASS OF WINTER". Just like that, "THE OBSTINATE GREEN GRASS OF WINTER". I knew that eventually this would be a poem, so I prepared myself to be receptive when the rest of the words came forth. It didn't happen until I got quiet and still. Here is what I received. Just for the record I post these poems just as I receive them and will probably go back at a later date to improve on them or not.

The Obstinate Green Grass of Winter

The Winter freeze
brings forth bare trees
the snow plow clears the path
but the obstinate green grass of Winter
defys nature and common sense

The birds fly south
the squirrels gather their harvest
children bundle from head to toe
still the obstinate green grass of Winter
defys Winter and refuses to go

The first snow storm
the fireplace and its' warmth
hot chocolate dole out to all
yet the obstinate green grass of winter
stands firm, stands tall, stands proud

The Winter freeze
brings forth bare trees
the snow plow digs a trench
but the obstinate green grass of Winter
defys nature and common sense

I was trying to decide what to write about today and I remembered one of the survey questions ask "Who is your favorite poet". I could not answer this question because my favorite poet changes each time I read the poetry of great poets, known and unknown. I have been blessed to receive a poem a day from poemhunters.com for several years and I am floored by some of the poems I receive. When I receive the poem of the day and the name of the author I usually google the bio of the author to learn more about he/she, and to my surprise most of the poems were written in the 1800's or before.

Today I will share a poem written by Oliver Wendell Holmes, which took my breath away with it's beauty. Mr. Holmes stands among the finest specimens of American wit and humor; his writings are classed among the best of their kind. His prose is delighted by the frequent occurance of brilliant and original thoughts. He stands in the temple of American literature, among the most brilliant and popular writers. Mr. Holmes was born in Cambridge, MA on August 29,1809 and he died on October 7,1894.

Sun and Shadow

As I look from the Isle, o'er its billows of green,
Too the billows of foam-created blue,
Yon bark, that afar in the distance is seen,
Half dreaming, my eyes will pursue;
Now dark in the shadow, she scatters the spray
As the chaff in the stroke of the flail;
Now white as the sea-gull, she flies on her way,
The sun gleaming bright on her sail.

Yet her pilot is thinking of dangers to shun,-
Of breakers that whiten and roar;
How little he cares, if in shadow or sun
They see him who gaze from the shore!
He looks to the beacon that looms from the reef,
To the rock that is under his lee,
As he drifts on the blast, like a wind-wafted leaf,
O'er the gulfs of the desolate sea.

Thus drifting afar to the dim-vaulted caves
Where life and its ventures are laid,
The dreamers who gaze while we battle the waves
May see us in sunshine or shade:
Yet true to our course, though the shadows grow dark,
We'll trim our broad sail as before,
And stand by the rudder that governs the bark,
Nor ask how we look for the shore!

~Oliver Wendell Holmes

This is beautiful, it actually takes my breath away each time I read it!

Hugs!

3.  Why Is Fall Called FallID #668261

September 18,2009

Sitting on the balcony today the blue sky is concealed by the gray clouds once again. The temperature is cool and pleasant. As I sat and enjoyed the cooler temp, I came to the realization that it is almost Fall. Fall, the season that I love best, the season of my birth. Relishing the coolness and the warm (good) feeling, you might even call it renewed energy. I began to wonder why is Fall called Fall? Who determined that it should be called Fall? Was it because the temperature falls to a lower degree, was it because the leaves fall from the trees, or was it because they change from the green of spring and summer to the many shades of orange, brown and yellow, preparing for the stark nakedness of winter? The journey is in full swing.

Why Is Fall Called Fall?
Who made the decision,
Who made the call,
To call Fall, Fall.

Fall is a burst of colors
Unlike the burst of Spring.
It has a different feeling
It creates an altered scene.

Sitting on the balcony,
This question took control.
That's when I began to ponder
Why is Fall called Fall?

2.  The Sky Is Always BlueID #668257

September 17, 2009

It has been raining in my little town in Texas for seven days now. I love drizzling rain, so I have enjoyed it immensely. Today there was a break and I went out on the balcony to get a breath of fresh air. While sitting there I peered into the gray coverage to see a speck of blue and yes, sunshine behind the gray high above it. The thought came to me that even though we don't see it, the sky is always blue.

In this journey called life we have our ups and downs, our trials and tribulations, our failures and our successes. When the clouds of life obstruct your view, remember through the clouds, high up above them the sky is always blue. Thus the journey begins.

The Sky Is Always Blue

While sitting on my balcony
Under dark gray rolling clouds
I saw a speck of powder blue
Gradually peeking through

While I continued to observe
The gray clouds persevered, and
Oh so slowly before my eyes
The blue sky disappeared

So, when you're in your darkest hour
Among the heavy haze
If you hold on until tomorrow
There will be better days

Don't give up
Don't give in
Please don't despair
Above the dark gray rolling clouds
The blue sky's always there
