8/20/03 - Internal RhymeEntry #253262
--- INTRO ---

Poetry! It comes in all styles and meanings. Some poems express personal feelings; others demonstrate a particular pattern. Most of us write some combination in between. I'll be offering advice on different styles and pointing out techniques to improve your poems. Enjoy *Delight* --Jian~Ashen

--- LETTER ---

Internal Rhyme

To rhyme at the ends of lines is no challenge. It is expected, and anyone can do it - it just takes some skill to do it creatively. A more entertaining form of rhyme is internal rhyme.
This is when you insert shorter rhymes close together, usually within the same line, but not as part of the end rhyme. They don't change the couplets or division of stanzas. They are just extra internal decoration, like alliteration.

The snow from the tree has inevitably fallen down
While gaslights call sprites forth from the town

In the above example, the internal rhymes are highlighted in red. Notice they don't affect the main rhymes ("down" and "town") at all.

Use internal rhymes sparingly for best effect. If you use them too much at the beginning of a poem, the reader will expect that it's part of your pattern (and then it's tedious to try to employ the rhyme scheme throughout). Over-used, you might as well be writing a song, for it will sound like rap lyrics. That's not a bad thing, just not as easy to do as it seems. Smile

--- PICKS ---

As is obvious from the title, this is a stream-of-consciousness style poem. Pretty good, with the occasional internal rhyme thrown in, too Smile

Here's a perfect example of internal rhymes in addition to regular rhyming. This poem even highlights the internal rhymes so you can spot where they are.

This colorful poem uses a fairly simple (but absolutely valid) method of internal rhyme...

Force of Nature  [ASR]
You are at the mercy of the elements.
by Davy Kraken

This piece is so full of internal rhymes that it reads like a rap song! Check it out, and see if you don't find yourself be-bopping as you read. Wink

Only one internal rhyme occurs in here, at the beginning of the sonnet. Doesn't it make you look for more?
