Title:
WHAT IS POETRY?—a sonnet
WHAT IS POETRY?—a sonnet
[Poetry is that soothes the heart]
When thoughts are too deep for telling in prose,
When sentences and phrases can’t suffice;
When only words cannot convey to those
To whom we want our feelings to apprise;
When words are overshadowed by meaning,
When logic overrides the expression;
When writer simply writes as he’s dreaming
But rules of language mar his intention;
It’s then that poetry assumes a shape,
When tears drip from a heart that is broken.
A poem consists not only of words,
Its each word is, of feelings, a token.
Wounds of the heart does true poetry nurse,
What can’t be healed by balm is healed by verse.
