Title:
POETRY AND RHYTHM
POETRY AND RHYTHM
What is a poem? What does
It represent in fact?
Is it a mere inner urge?
Is it born of some tact?
Those who favor urge theory,
Say only this matters,
That we write what comes to mind,
A jumble of letters.
Feeling and the writer’s urge
Are truly important.
But, why present them roughly
In a manner blatant?
Why not try to garnish them
With the sweetness of rhyme?
Why not balance syllables
So that they smoothly chime?
Then what comes out will be a
Poem as well as song,
In praising which I don’t think
There can be something wrong.
In the end I must say that
Poetry must have rhythm.
Rhyme and syllable count are
Part of that algorithm.
But rhyme and syllable count
Are never essential.
Even without these there is,
Of rhythm, a potential.
If the rhythm in a free verse
Is not perceptible,
To label it as poem,
I shall not be able.
