Book Problems...Entry #542124

I am so frustrated right now, so mad at myself, and so disappointed. I finally published my book of poetry last week. I thought everything was perfect, but it wasn't. My book cover had crop marks on it and I thought that once my book got published that those crop marks would be gone. It turned out to be otherwise. Lulu doesn't deal with crop marks, and they should not be included. I just couldn't leave the book as is because not only did it ruin the cover, but the round crop mark on the lying female might have given people the impression that she has been shot. Having no choice I spent 2.5 hours and dragged myself to the graphic design artist who made me the cover so that she could get rid of those nasty crop marks and so I'd be able to re-appload the cover. We fixed everything up and changed the cover, but because someone had already bought the book (with the messed up cover) it now exists as version 2 or the second edition. I guess that doesn't really matter since the old book cover is gone, and from now on anyone who buys the book will get it with the new cover.

I thought that since I fixed this problem that everything else is fine. But no! I just went back to my manuscript document to see if one of the poems I was looking at was actually included in the book. As I was browsing through the table of contents I noticed that two poems repeat themselves. So what people will find on the table of contents would be something like this:

Sleeping Foot........................159
Headache.............................160
Headache.............................160
Rush Hour Traffic...................161

Now that's just screwed up! I looked over the table of contents and fixed that problem before submitting the file to them. I remember it was fixed. How it came back into existence I have no idea, but it doesn't matter because it is present in my book. Maybe readers won't really notice this annoying supposedly overlooked typo, but just knowing that it exists, makes me not only want to scream but also burst into tears. And now I am not even sure if that's the only fault in the book. Argh!

I've looked over the damn manuscript so many times that I can't believe that this happened. And maybe there's something else I still ended up missing. Yeah they suggested I buy the book and look it over first before making it available to others but I thought since I spent endless times looking over the manuscript that there's nothing wrong with it.

Three people already bought the book with that careless table of contents typo. And one of those people is unfortunate enough to also get the screwed up cover with the crop marks. That's not how I wanted this to turn out.

I really want to re-appload the manuscript with the corrected table of contents even though it will be the third version, but I am unsure if all's 100% right. And the thought of looking over the entire thing is just making me want to bang my head against the wall. Though that's major disappointment for me, especially since I am a higly detail-oriented person, perhaps I should let be as is. After though this typo is major to me, it's not major in actuality. It's not as bad as having an omitted line, or a misspelled word, or a mispelled word that creates another word that makes the line confusing. I will just have to live with it. I guess nothing is ever perfect.

And just to give you a chuckle here...when I was apploading the book onto lulu.com, I had this weird and scary deja vu moment as if I went through this process before I something was screwed up. Maybe that was a sign for me to not go through the publication at that time, but I thought none of it. Yes, it freaked me out, but I didn't take it as a bad sign. Now it seems I should have. If I get something like this when I am submitting my second book to them, I will definitely stop the process...
