No Freak Outs AllowedEntry #580489
People asking me to do things for them. Kids whining about stuff. Phones ringing. Chaos in a social setting.

And how do I handle it?

By keeping my calm. By realizing that these are all attempts by other people to control me. Once I find my inner calm and center myself, then can I deal with what really needs attention first. Everything else just falls into place.

It's taken me years to learn how to stay balanced under pressure. At work, it's key that I remain calm when emergencies arise. Fortunately I've never really been one to lose control when situations go awry.

Like three weeks ago, when my daughter got hurt at daycare and needed stitches. All the women at her daycare were totally freaking out. They even wanted to call an ambulance! Trust me, it wasn't as bad as they thought it was. Sure Charlie was in a lot of pain, she was bleeding where her leg was punctured some metal handle thing. So I made her hold some paper towels to it while I drove her to the ER. She screamed all the way there (talk about UNNERVING), but in the end, all she needed was eight stitches and some time to calm down.

She's fine now, by the way. We handled it very well.

Chaos is common in the clinic where I work. For some reason, people seem to think our outpatient clinic is the freakin' ER. We get folks with chest pain, possible strokes, bleeding, you name it. And what do we do with them, once they're stabilized?

Ship them out by ambulance to the ER, of course.

Since I'm the one that calls for the ambulances, it's very important that I stay centered and in control of myself.

And I like to think I'm getting better at it every day.
