Writing.com blog/journal entry
June 16, 2009
Well, we finally got internet connection at our new house! So much has happened and lots of different situations – of course, after how long ago my last entry here was, I should certainly hope so.
So, to the writing first!
I have the green light to set myself a deadline – I am submitting Hall of Secrets next month. The publisher only wants 500 words of the actual ms in the submission package allows himself 4 months to respond so I plan to polish the start, my pitch, synopsis etc in order to submit and will tackle the revisions in flight. I want to get some of the changes made before submitting, otherwise I would submit at the end of this month, but I estimate that I’ve got roughly 12-13 weeks of major revisions left. I also have proposed a new website design for my book promotion site etc. which I want viewable by the publisher while he reviews my submission. This is a big push for me because I have lots of other things going on and the estimation is based on serious and consistent progress. The goal is to have everything done on this book done before the first of September. My baby is due around mid September so this is a close call. Now, if it goes into contract and the publisher wants to push it for his October release (which is what I’m hoping for!), then I’m sure I will still have more to do until October, but I think it’s doable – IF I buckle down and focus.
One thing that it means is that although I’m “back online”, I have to limit my internet distractions. And distractions include just about everything on my computer (and lots that isn’t digital) that doesn’t directly get my book ready for publication.
The deadline is exciting, but it will stretch and push me. Part of it is that I know it will be easier to push to the finish with this book before the baby comes. I don’t want to still be picking at it over the holidays.
Meanwhile, most of the rest of my life is going along fine. It would really help if our house in Idaho would sell though. Paying for rent, plus a mortgage puts a strain on the finances even though we now have a good job. However, between bills, the two houses (with 3 kids and the 4th on its way, an apartment would be more expensive than renting a house! So we are renting a house), food/daily expenses like gas, my school loans and other debts – the cost still keeps us pretending like we’re still college students. And his school loans will start payments this fall. So we really want the house to sell. Have a couple interested, even accepted a contract, but they are apparently having difficulties securing the financing. So, we shall see.
The move took its toll on housekeeping and I’m still picking at the remaining boxes. However, we have a fair amount of room, a nice big yard for a city lot, nice family-friendly neighborhood, a park in walking distance and a two car garage. How can I complain?
So, preparing for submission, I have a hookline and pitch:
I look forward to feedback and polishing in order to put my best foot forward and nail that contract!
