The Powerful Nose
Aug 4th
Supposedly our sense of smell is strong enough to take us to very distinct memories. In a poem OR a story, recount a time, place or situation when someone's olfactory sense led them back to a memory.

The thing about scent related memories is that they are often hard to remember without first smelling that smell. I'm sure the places I have lived have distinct scents, but I would have to smell those scents before I could be transported to that memory.

One scent related memory I have actually starts with a feeling. The feeling of hot sun beating down on my bare shoulders and unprotected face and then the feeling of a cool spritz of something liquid onto my skin. Sunscreen. The little drops of sunscreen hit my closed eyelids and dart up my nose as I try to take a breath. What must have been one of my earliest beach experiences, this sunscreen scent has continued to remind me of the beach and the searing heat radiating off the powder sand and the rumbling waves. Even today, I smell sunscreen and close my eyes as a sort of reflex and defense against the spray of sunscreen I expect to be coming.

In other news:

US women's eight rowers won gold in the Olympics. What a motivator! Our rowing team has our last race on Sunday (tomorrow) so of course the women winning gold in the exact event that I will be racing in is a huge boost.

Went to pick up my parents today at the airport. My sis played a song on the piano in the baggage claim which (though I had to practically force her), was very brave.

We all went in the pool again and that was relaxing, even though we had to share with three little kids.

Dream and Meditation Log

Dream Log:

I thought I dreamed. I FELT like I dreamed last night, but I woke up and nothing was written in my notebook. Frown

Meditation Log:

Listened to 396Hz Solfeggio Frequencies with a 12Hz Alpha wave Binaural Beat designed to stimulate mental awareness. I found myself daydreaming a lot but that is to be expected because alpha waves promote mental activity.
