"It's because I hate my life! Don't you understand?" Juri's eyes filled with tears, and her voice shook. "There is no reason for me to be alive! Nothing around that I'm needed for! My life has no purpose!"

"And how the hell do you know that?" Arlon locked his fierce eyes with her's. "None of us knows for certain whether or not we have a purpose. Maybe we all have one, and maybe none of us do. For all we know we could be rambling about this earth doing nothing for nothing, but the thing is, we don't know! We can't know! Pull yourself together!" He placed his hands on her quivering shoulders. "We must all go on through life, and do our best. We must each choose what is important to us, and then work for it. That is all we can do, and it is what we must do. Listen to me." One of his hands moved to hold her chin. "Even if you feel your life is not important, what about the people in that vilage? What about the children who have yet to have their chance at finding their purpose?"

Arlon searched her eyes for some answer. They stared up at him in frightened confusion. Why did she have to be so narrow-minded and selfish? If she left now not only would she die, but many others would as well. She had to stay and press on!

Juri turned her eyes from him and looked at the ground behind her. She suddenly felt relaxed, resigned. "You're wrong," she whispered, "It doesn't matter. None of it matters. We are all doomed."
