Title: January - Inspiration!!

Novel Workshop [#589961]
The Novel Workshop's Sig

Welcome to the first edition of the Novel Workshop's Newsletter! Wow! What a time we've had so far!

** #599113 Not An Image **

We're now Writing.com WooHoo! It's soo exciting to see just how much this website has grown! That's wonderful!

I'm very glad that we - The Write Experience -have survived so far. We've all accomplished quite a bit in a very short amount of time. Thanks to pendragon for coming up with this wonderful idea! There are soooo many talented and wonderful authors in our forums! The books that I've been reading have been amazing! I know that all of the moderators are very excited about our forums and the level of success we've been experiencing thus far.

I know there have been a few complaints from the forums that some people are not participating. pendragon has come up with a couple of ideas that we'll be testing out soon. A warning to everyone! If you are not pariticipating by critiquing regularly and writing regularly, you will be asked to leave. It's simply unfair to the rest of us who put a lot of work into this group to get our novels and yours finished, polished and out the door. If you have any problems, complaints or thoughts - good as well as bad - be sure to share them with the moderators!

Which leads me to the next thing! We have a new moderator! Yippee! cellar door has joined the ranks as the new Fiction Forum moderator. Diane is now the moderator of only one forum, which should give her some extra breathing room at deadline time!

We thank you all for making the Writing Experience such a fun and informative time!!

In our first edition of the Novel Workshop's Newsletter, our line up is:

Author of the bi-week -
To start in Jan 17th publication
Editorial
Brag Board
Posted advice
Advice column
Grammar column
          Punctuation Place
         Style Salon
         Vocabulary Vault
Question of the bi-week

I hope that everyone enjoys the newsletter!

Have a happy new year!!!

Advice Posted in the Forum

mckenzie who has had some experience in the publishing market has been very helpful in the Romance Forum as far as posting advice. Some of her advise, you've seen posted in the intro part of your own forums when she talks about different aspects of your novel and what each thing means. Please, for your benefit, take the time to read what she has to say. It has been very informative and does not apply strictly to romance.

The following are some questions that you should ask yourself about your chapter:

1. Does the chapter start with a hook?

2. Are the elements of relationships between characters present?

3. Is there conflict, not just confrontation? Is the conflict emotional or physical? Is the conflict believable?

4. Are the characters motivated? Are they real or cardboard? WHY are they behaving this way? Are their motivations believable?

5. Is your heart in it? Will the reader FEEL what is happening?

6. Does the action or dialogue move the story forward? Does the story evolve?

7. Did you start at the wrong time? Should this be backstory? START AT THE POINT OF CHANGE. Only give as much backstory as needed for the plot and character motivation.

8. Does your dialogue sound like real conversation? Are tag lines used sparingly? Can you always tell who is talking? Does each character have a distinctive voice?

9. Is the POV(Point of view, or whose head are we in?) consistent, only one view per scene? Keep secondary POV to a minimum. Beware of omniscient(being able to see into every character's mind) POV. Show, don’t tell. Did you select the POV that is best suited for viewing an emotional reaction? (if you can’t say it about yourself, neither would the POV character. They can’t react to what they don’t see or hear or smell, etc.)

10. Are you repeating a phrase or word too often? Do they sigh or pause too much?

11. Are the format, spelling and grammar correct? Are your history facts correct?

12. Have you alternated the length of your sentences? Has your word choice made horrifying pictures? ( Eyes flew, head dropped) Is there a good balance between dialogue and narrative? Are the transitions quick and painless?

13. Did you AVOID-- the Passive tense? Overuse of the ‘be’ verb? Repetition of similar sentence structure? Getting your sentence in the wrong sequential order? ( -ing implies simultaneity) Colorless, dead verbs? Too many adverbs? Flowery or overstructured sentences? Redundancy? Overlong passages of interior monologue? Mirrors?

14. Did you show as much as possible, not tell?

15. Is this a page turner? Is it original or boring and predictable?

16. Did you info-dump? Will this be of interest to the reader? Does it have something to do with the story? Does it move the story forward?

17. Are your characters consistent? Are they likeable? Do they show virtues, traits and faults?

18. Is the stage set where the time frame and location is believable? Is the tone appropriate to the time?

19. This was strictly for the Romance genre and is posted there and relates to R rated material better not used in a G rated newsletter.

20. Does the scene show a goal, conflict and disaster or success? Is the conflict played moment by moment, with no summary? Does the outer conflict exacerbate the character’s inner conflict? Is the outcome honest?

21. Is the scene followed by a sequel? Does the character respond emotionally and intellectually to the action of the scene? Does he or she analyze and plan the next action that will lead to the next scene?

22. Is there any foreshadowing?

23. Did you end the chapter with a hook?

Remember to answer these questions honestly. If you cannot answer some of them, ask someone in your forum for help. This should help us polish our chapters up nicely.

My novels [#590360]
A nice thinking spot.

Question of the bi-month

You know its that time of year again! I want you to tell me what your New Year's Resolutions are, but don't stop there. Ideas are great, but plans, initiative and drive make things happen. I want to know what your plans are and how/why you think you can accomplish what you set out to in the upcoming year. Two people will be published in the next newsletter, so think it over and send them in. I would like to see your entries by Jan 10th. We'll be publishing again on Jan 17th.

Excercise of the Mind

Ok, guys. I've been reading through a lot of your novels - there are a lot of them out there! One thing I've noticed is that some of the novels are lacking depth in character development which leads me to believe you don't know your characters very well.

So, here's your assignment. I want you to buy your characters dinner at the local pub. Sit down with your characters - the main ones and maybe the main supporting - and chat with them. While chatting with them and getting to know them, write down your conversation.

Tell me what they look like. Describe to me some of their body language. Do they drink coffee or soda? Do they like ketchup on their fries?

Send your conversations in. If I like what I see, maybe I'll post a few of them. The idea is for you to get to know your charactors.

Well, that's all for now! Have yourselves a great time and let me hear from you real soon! Have a wonderful new year, everyone and good luck!
