Thunder broke through the screaming rain. Violent shrudders raced through Samuel's body. His hands shook as he held the elf's limp body. Her thin neck was thrust upward towards him and her head lolled heavily down. Her long blonde hair lay tangled in the mud.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Samuel muttered. He drew the body closer to him. He rocked back and forth on his heels as he squated on the damp earth. The rain continued to fall upon him and the body. "I didn't mean to, I swear! I know what you said, I remember, but I also remember-" He choked slightly as he reached to brush a hand across her face, wiping the hair and dirt away. "I couldn't let you die," he whispered. He bent closer to the body, closer to her thin face. "I couldn't let you leave."
One of his hands slid downward to grasp one of hers that was sitting limply in the mud. The flesh felt cold, almost as if it was made of ice. He cringed, remembering how warm she had been not so long ago. Only a few hours before she had. . .
Another torrent of shrudders racked their way through his body. He almost cried, or maybe he was crying. He couldn't tell with the rain; he couldn't tell through the storm of emotions swirling inside him.
His eyes looked over her body, starting with her feet. They were bare, and bits of dirt clung to them. He looked at the bottom of her leather breeches, made of deerskin. They were torn in some places, and frayed at the ends. Her tunic was torn down the front though he had tried to keep it intact. Her chest was covered with bruises and scars, and her neck. . .
He ran a finger slowly over the thick, puckered scar along her neck. It was still very red, but at least it had closed. "Look," he said softly, "The fatal wound is closed. It is already healing. It will definatly leave a scar, but at least you'll-"
Another bang of lightning caused him to jump and the body slid into the bud with a splash. Samuel gasped. "Sorry, so sorry! You'll be angry when you wake, but I'll take care of you." He bent toward her head and whispered in her ear. "I swear, I won't let you die again." |
