CHAPTER 31

SHARED WEAPONS

The polished chrome sky hinting at the day to come highlighted the eastern horizon. The undulating spine of the Sierra Nevada Mountains were a serpentine vision of back lit splendor. Into this daily vista wandered the three who are one. Myself, fully aware of Sachems penchant for surprise, showed no reaction at finding the table set and breakfast scenting the morning air. I and Me still felt somewhat curious at the ancient warrior’s lack of need for sleep. While the thought entered their mind, it did not lessen the gustatory rumblings stirred by the aroma of bacon, coffee, and eggs. Greetings filled the morning air and all took their seats. Conversation could wait as all four focused on the cuisine abundantly arrayed before them. At last chairs were thrust from the table and contented sounds of fulfillment found their voice. The one who is three in unison expressed their joint pleasure at the splendid breaking of fast. The combined efforts of all soon had every indication of the meal cleaned to pristine perfection and silent agreement passed between them. Now was the time for polishing their weapons and planning their strategy. Sachem suggested they retire to the patio and bathe in the coming dawn. Here, he suggested they could discuss the necessities of the coming campaign in the natural surroundings of their world.

Sachem felt it important to inform his cohorts of the efforts he had taken to accomplish their goal. He began his discussion by stating his hope he had been correct in his assumptions. “As I waited, it came to my thoughts that my role in this endeavor was to be no longer passive. This caught me off guard after so many years as an observer and guardian. I shall explain my response to this realization and if my reasoning is flawed, please inform me. Everything I have done can only enhance this effort and none of it will be harmful should I have been wrong.” He then began informing his cohorts of the meetings he had implemented and the results achieved. He further offered copies of the ‘truths’ which the people of Whynot had taken the effort to record and carry. I sat in rapt amazement of these disclosures. His head bobbed continually in assent until Sachem concluded his discourse.

I’s response was immediate and heartfelt, “That is amazing. You have accomplished, the very thing needed for our goal. We three had reached these same conclusions and hoped you could achieve such results. It is important to keep the citizens focus from falling on any of the three of us. By establishing a mysterious authority figure, we three will be free to direct the establishment of community directions required to achieve the changes we hope to implement. This morning we will outline our vision and the order, timeline, and manner we hope to apply. If you agree, we shall then funnel all communication through you for your presentation to the population. We have realized it is far more effective to have a wise mysterious sage say these things rather than a common person. A mysterious authority is hard to argue with and will greatly facilitate our success in this effort.”

I paused and looked at his fellow warriors waiting their response. Sachem took this opportunity to state his agreement to I’s assessment. Me added his input by saying, “It appears we have each reached the same conclusion independently. This should tell us something about our unification in this matter. Perhaps it is time to stop drawing blueprints and start pounding nails.” After a moments silence there was a joint nodding of assent, however Myself could not let the opportunity pass without adding his aside. “Well, my good friend, it appears you
have cut to the chase and managed to hit the nail right on the head.” This comment brought a chorus of groans along with the smiles of his friends. Sachem placed his hand on Myself’s shoulder and said, “My friend as long as you never change we shall not have to worry about staying grounded. I am convinced you would see the humor in a gunfight, even if you lost. This is a wonderful trait and I am sure it will serve us well. Now, as I am curious, please tell me what we are going to do.”

The balance of the day was spent in the mutual exchange of visions, thoughts, and conclusions thus far reached. Sachem sat absorbing these thoughts, in quiet amazement. At salient junctures, he would add suggestions and insights as to his role in the implementation of this information. The only time they were not in deep discussion, were the two breaks necessitated by the need for sustenance? Long into the night this strategy planning session continued. It was remarkable that four people could communicate such complex ideas without argument or outright hostilities. Nevertheless, this was exactly what occurred this fateful day. At the conclusion of the evening Sachem sat for a moment and then stated his feelings, “For all my existence my curiosity lay hidden. Not once did I question my role as keeper of the door however, I can now admit to my curiosity. What you three have seen and planned is brilliant and more than that…true. Such a simple idea yet so complex it could remain invisible for all this time. Oh, that is not to say we do not have our work cut out for ourselves. Nevertheless, if we stick to the guidelines developed to date, there is likelihood of success. Caution, planning, implementation all leading to the world that was meant to exist. It does not help to focus on the length or difficulty of a task. It is far more productive to focus on getting it done. If we hold to that realization each day will be a link in the chain of success.”

Me summed up the days progress and added his view of the morrow’s effort. “What has happened today is remarkable in view of the lack of dissent, and tomorrow we need to get to the specific order of operations we intend to apply. The foundation of any structure is the key to the longevity of its life. Tomorrow we begin to pour our foundation and it must be sound.” With this said, three of the four acknowledged their mortality and admitted sleep was a beckoning siren’s cry. There was a palpable sense of destiny and all were caught in its power. However, like it or not, the time had come for the refueling benefits of rest, and the three who is one rose to seek its arms. Yes, ‘Scarlet’ tomorrow is another day.

CHAPTER 32

CIRCLE THE WAGONS

It was obvious to all three friends, that the deeper they got into their project the more soundly they slept. It was as if each day’s progress provided a conscious soothing balm to their souls and they slept the sleep of the just. It was no longer necessary for anyone to wake the others. Anticipation provided each days wake up call and it was with refreshed vigor they faced the challenges of the day. The predawn light was but a glow on the eastern horizon, when the three friends stepped from their lairs. As was the case on all mornings, Sachem had timed his cooking efforts to match the appearance of the three who are one. I noted this telepathic performance by announcing, “Win, lose, or draw in our efforts, we will never be able to complain about the service. As for my view on it, the worst that can happen is we three shall become hopelessly spoiled by our newfound partner’s attendance to our welfare.” Me, and Myself were swift in their affirmation of this view. After, all were seated Me, made note of a curious observation, “Sachem, I’ve noticed, while you always sit with us, it seems this is more
mannerly than necessity. If any of us tried to subsist on your caloric intake we would shortly disappear.”

Sachem responded by informing his cohorts, “Food is like sleep for me, an unnecessary endeavor. However, in the case of food my efforts are fueled by pleasure not need. I enjoy the experience of eating and I enjoy the communication these times afford. I have always found breakfast a particularly enjoyable social experience. My life has been rather solitary in nature so on the few occasions the opportunity presents itself I am happy to avail myself of its benefits.” Myself added his feelings on the matter in his usual straightforward manner, “Eat or don’t eat, as long as you continue preparing these excellent meals I am a happy camper.”
“Myself I’ll give you this, you never fail to express your heart in all its basic glory.” In this lighthearted manner, the meal progressed to its completion.

Their joint efforts made short work of cleaning up and allowed them to adjourn to the patio in time to greet the appearance of the sun. The playful banter of the meal quickly became the serious imparting of strategic outlines of battle. Me took the floor for this discussion. He began by throwing open the discussion to address any questions which might exist. His primary concern was the assurance that Sachem fully grasped the information they had shared yesterday. Stating the key role Sachem would play he began, “In order to secure our foundation is absolutely sound, now is the time any questions need to be addressed. My feeling is we four have reached common ground in this matter however, if there are any areas not completely clear, now is the time for clarification.” Sachem did not hesitate in speaking up, “The discussion of yesterday was very concise in outlining the exact path for accomplishing our goal. I had no problem seeing exactly how the efforts to buy back the freedoms and security, which should already exist, can be done. Further, the taking advantage of my authority image is also very clear. Where I would feel more comfortable, in my understanding, is clarification of exactly what I will be required to implement. You surely realize this is a business-oriented effort and there is nothing in my background, which prepares me for this.”

“Excellent point and I believe we should make a written record of what we are about to discuss. For all of our understanding of the order, purpose, and timing of this effort it is a good idea to openly discuss, debate, and finalize exactly what we are going to do. In all of our discussions, with each other, there is agreement on one overriding necessity….balance. What we are attempting to accomplish requires this factor to be met before anything else may be achieved. Balance is required for all progress, be it walking, running, or riding a bike. However, it is not just in mobility matters that this is true. Balance is the under riding foundation of all we do. In any endeavor, a focus on balance is vital for the successful implementation of that goal. We have further agreed this balance is not humankind’s prerogative it is the worlds and this makes our effort extremely complex. It must be accepted that in this endeavor, we will fail and this is not bad because our goal is to start a process of adjustment, which is self-fueling and self-adjusting. We have designed this concept to provide individual benefits which shall make this process so individually enticing that the benefits received by others shall be irrelevant.”

Me again looked about; he was assured all were with him so continued. “Sachem, it is our intent to use Whynot as the foundation of a new nation. You, as our point man will instill the foundations of honor, truth, responsibility…Neighborhood values. It is from this foundation that we hope to launch the business concepts, which will forever eliminate the concerns of security, health, and provide future acknowledgement of every individual’s value to their nation. We are going to apply the concept we believe is missing from our current national orientation. Our structure shall be based on, ‘A nation of the people, by the people and for the people,’ and if we are successful in our expansion of this, we shall throw off our camouflage and address the world. We will have in place a working example of what truly can be done and we shall offer it to all humankind. Currently our target figure for this unveiling is two and a half million members who are dedicated to this effort. That target figure will give us the political power needed to insure we cannot be swept under the carpet as radical extremists.”

“Sachem you are vital to this effort because as the enigmatic founder, who disappears, they cannot focus on ringleaders, whom they can attack and eliminate. The three of us, at no time are to be pointed at as founders or in any way leaders of this cause. If we are successful what will appear, is a united group of people dedicated to honor, fairness, and genuine concern for all people’s welfare. We agree the carrot we are going to dangle to accomplish this goal is valid and compelling and all that is needed is our resolve and a few nudges for its success.” This final statement led to a chorus of agreement and affirmation of unity. “Well said,” was Myself’s response and he further stated, “This is exactly what we hope and now is the time to choose the threads with which we shall weave this tapestry.”

CHAPTER 33

GATHERING WOOL

Me held the floor as the discussion continued, “We have defined a number of areas and it is imperative they be established before all else. The first of these is the acceptance, by our society, of our concept of land usage without ownership. Sachem, here you should have a reasonably simple task if you explain the Indian belief that the land cannot be owned. We are dealing with a group of people who are hungry for new ways, and simple ideas. Once they have accepted this concept, the benefits which accrue to the individual, should eliminate the problem of having to convincing future generations of the sagacity of this approach.”

“Responsibility, at every level, we must instill this vital belief. This is the heart and soul of what we are attempting and for success every citizen must accept it is their job to make it work. For this to happen, a weekly newspaper will be needed. The primary purpose of this periodical will be too openly, honestly, and without prejudice, report everything concerning the welfare and advancement of the community. This reporting must be written in the clearest possible manner to assure comprehension by the greatest number of people. Simple majority shall pass all decisions therefore only one political party will need to exist. The two party systems currently in use truthfully is a ball game where the division of the spoils is the ball. Our one party system shall be called the neighborhood party and their meetings and discussions shall be held in open forum at the Neighborhood Café. Committee’s, oversight organizations, division of party unity are not to be allowed and if attempted shall result in banishment. The agenda of all meetings will be announced, one meeting in advance, and it is every citizen’s responsibility to research the implications of what will be discussed at that meeting. On the night of that meeting, one to two hours will be spent in open sharing of this research and conclusions. In this way like groupings of people can seek each other out, and select their spokesperson to present their views.”

Sachem spoke up and suggested, “I feel the naming of this body should be altered slightly in order to reflect the goals we hope to achieve. For our initial purposes of getting these people involved, a game playing atmosphere can be initiated by calling these meetings, ‘The Neighborhood of First and Last Americans Tribal Council.’ This slight change will make the introduction of Indian lore, involving land ownership and community involvement, a far simpler task. “Brilliant,” came the response of his three conspirators, “That is the exact approach we should take.” After excited discussion, all four friends were in unanimous agreement and Me, Myself, and I added in matters of presentation and implementation they would defer to Sachem’s decisions on how to accomplish these goals. They made it, perfectly, clear it was the goal, which was important, and his years of knowledge far exceeded theirs. His intimate knowledge of the customs of his heritage was given free rein for the achievement of their goals. In the course of these discussions it became apparent to all three the unity and trust, which welded them into this common effort.
Myself was unable to contain himself and thus spoke, “Hell if three of us went away and left the fourth person to do as he wanted, upon returning, it would be impossible to determine which of us had done the work. That is how tightly linked our thoughts are concerning this matter. Each of us must accept we are in a battle and at any given time, we may have to improvise on our own. Our advantage is we have no doubt about the ability of each of us to do the right thing and this frees us to focus on our own chore.

indent}Switching his narration, Myself then jerked them back from their shameless back slapping, by stating, “Education, here is where we shall win. Education when combined with nurturing can eliminate the need for role-playing in one to two generations. If we structure our educational facilities, correctly, the next generation shall automatically fulfill their role and in the successive generation, it will be fully implemented. We must stress the importance of education, commonsense, and responsibility. Commonsense allows the viewing of any endeavor and immediately detecting the bullshit factor. Education gives access to the knowledge base, which is in existence and allows all people to apply its value. These two factors will of course be subject to the inherent abilities of the individuals. However, each person must be encouraged to stretch to the fullness of his or her ability. It must be taught, this is the responsibility society asks of them, and every tool must be brought to bear for achieving this goal. No nation can say they are successful if one person is left without these advantages. The only reason for not focusing on this fact is advantage.

An advantage used by those who have unequal and superior education opportunity and their willingness to use this for their purposes, not societies. We must not fail even one of our citizens or we have failed them all. Sachem rose, in the silence that followed these statements, and crossed to Myself. Placing his hand upon his friends shoulder, he calmly spoke, “When the Creator sent you to me as a student I had no idea the power he placed in my hands. I do not know if you have shared your ‘Totem’ name with our partners but this must be done. He turned and spoke to I and Me, saying, “I wish to introduce you to our fellow warrior and his name is ‘Big Heart’ my name is ‘Standing Bear’, I have also been given the names of Me, and I. Now is the time for us to share this information. Turning to I, he stated you are ‘Far Seer’ and this warrior is ‘Clear Water’ this final statement, indicating Me.

These names are for us to know and it is not necessary they be used. In my efforts with the citizens, I may refer to these names, for creating mystic personas, in support of my efforts. However, these personas shall remain mysterious authorities, never revealed, but ever present.

It was agreed their information exchange had been taxing, and all were hungry. After enjoying another of Sachem’s epicurean creations, they opted for a period of introspection and examination. Myself in his usual direct manner clarified this by stating, “What we mean is we need a nap.” This achieved his goal of breaking the serious mood they were engulfed in, and all four laughed at his candor.
CHAPTER 34

THE TIE THAT BINDS

On this night, there were no struggles of direction, no questions of purpose, only the welcome relief of deep and satisfying sleep. As the three who are one received the healing balm of sleeps rebirth, Sachem was left to ponder life’s mysteries. Sitting, under the canopy of the Creator’s magnificent star filled sky, his thoughts traveled the expanse of time he had walked his path. He was amazed and acutely aware of the radical change in his purpose precipitated by the last few years of his stewardship. Without any warning, his life had been taken from the passive pursuits, with which he was so familiar, into a world of dynamic participation. He found himself at the center of the reason for it all, a key factor for the achievement of the purpose for which he existed.

Many would assume this reversal confusing, and fear inspiring, but Sachem had no such thoughts. Amazement and gratitude were the foundation of his praise offered to the Creator. In rapt submission, he confessed these feelings and sent his admissions into the star filled sky. No effort was made to hide the excitement he felt at being included in this awesome endeavor. To hide these feelings would have been impossible for he vibrated with the warrior’s need to teach. Yes, the battlefield was ignorance, and he was aware of the frustration years of observing ignorance had engendered in him. Oh yes, he was ready to enter the fray and losing was not an option he had ever considered. His dedication to watching the doorway was now to be rewarded and he knew failure was the end of humankind. Sachem understood the pain the Creator would feel at the failure of humanity to embrace his gifts. He also understood the Creator had given free will in this matter and thus would accept the outcome without interference. High expectations were made on humanities part but should they fail, the Creator would not. After all, the Creator was patient and all-powerful, and his will would be done, either here and now, or elsewhere. Time did not exist in these matters for eternity recorded no time.

Sachem chuckled as he reminisced on his observations of history. He marveled at the divergence between the history he knew and the history that was recorded. The thought came to him that each day’s truth only existed for that day, and then changes for the needs of each successive day. This was a human proclivity, this altering of fact in order to enhance themselves for posterity. It never occurred to them that this alteration of truth only gave a false path for future humanity to follow. Humankind was so insecure, so foolish in their hope that by lying they could change the facts. He understood the true depths of damage this tendency engendered and he wondered did they not realize the phenomenal advance humanity would achieve by simply stopping this folly.

The bottom line reality of lying was simple, when a person tells a lie they demonstrate two things. One, they have done something they fear is wrong, and two they are a liar. In fact, balance in society would become reality by the elimination of this greatest of all crimes. All abuses would instantly realize their minimum occurrence, if humankind refused to lie. Theft, murder, cheating in all forms, all behavior detrimental to the achievement of humanities higher plane of existence, would be reduced to its lowest possible factor by stopping this one thing. When this is achieved, the aberrations could then be easily addressed, and corrected. He was amazed they did not understand the truth, that if you could not lie about your behavior, you would not be likely to behave incorrectly.

Honor, this was the deficiency of humanities makeup, which allowed such comportment. If a person honored himself or herself to be the best for their society, they could not abide lying as an option. In the event an epiphany instilled this unto humanity, their elevation to their highest value would be instantaneous.

His thoughts traveled to the goals of the path, which was unfurling before him, and his cohorts. Could it be societal design could bring about this required value in humanities makeup? Perhaps the individual’s necessity ‘is’ himself or herself, and the society’s responsibility is to be structured so that fulfilling the individual necessity automatically the whole structure is fed. If this was the case then the concepts of the three who is one could have a very real chance of achieving this end. He ruminated on his observations of the history of humanity and realized that at no juncture had anything remotely like the concepts of the three who is one every existed. Sadness filled his thoughts when he considered this own heritage. He knew that his people had come closer than others had any time in history. Perhaps it was this fact, which had placed him in charge of the doorway. Maybe his knowledge of how close they had come would lead him to help in the removal of the flaw, which had stopped his people from achieving it all.

He wondered if a few hundred more years would have allowed the spread of the Iroquois Federation to all tribes. Had this occurred, the defeating flaw of his people would have been removed and they would not have been conquered. Could have been, should have been, would have been, but wasn’t, and now maybe will be. Sachem had read the instruction books. He was well aware of the truth of the path they defined. He now found himself pondering a story contained in the one prevalent in the Christian culture.

He thought about the tower of Babel and the division of humanity by different languages, why was this truly done? Perhaps this was humanities burden for their foolishness of assuming they were welcome in the presence of the Creator. The door ‘is’ open to the Creators presence, but only by achieving humanities purpose is this true. Forcing your way into his presence is not an option, and perhaps this effort had resulted in this additional burden. He laughed at his thoughts as he realized trying to out guess the Creator was a folly, but he doubted if he would be judged on these thoughts. Remembering his presentation to Myself, about the founding of society and their belief they were ‘The People,’ he knew this too was the flaw of his ancestry. It was necessary for the acceptance that humankind was the tribe, and the only tribe; this was the only path for humankind to reach their higher plane.

Why has humanity wasted so much time and resources trying to demonstrate the differences between races? Nothing of any significance had ever been substantiated. If the scientific community would just issue a joint proclamation stating; “we have discovered that in reality there is, in fact, only one race…The human race.” How the walls would tumble, the road would be open to communication, and understanding, the likes of which has never been available. His own culture, if they had but accepted this they would have changed the world. He thought of the Chinese saying, “China cannot be conquered, for in time China will conqueror the conquerors.” This indicated the size and culture of China would sway any who came there, until they are more Chinese, than their original culture. The truth of this statement had been verified for millennium as various Nations had taken their best shot at holding this giant country.

Sachem had no dreams his ruminations would offer up solutions however, he found solace in the lessons they provided. Every scrap of knowledge would be important in the days ahead. “Fore warned is fore armed,” and besides he enjoyed the mystery of the puzzle. He noted the predawn light and realized he had passed the night in these reveries. Standing, he turned to enter the house and begin preparations for the coming day. The new sense of anticipation was a welcome companion as he began the preparation of the morning meal.

CHAPTER 35

TURNING PAGES

The morning light was not yet firmly in control of the coming day as the three who are one emerged from their repose. The morning was crisp and clean, with the dampness of fall dew. The seasons guard was changing and perhaps this foretold of the battle to come. The fragrance of morning’s meal mingled with fresh scent of fall and all gathered at the table to refuel their resolve. Conversation was light as consumption was the focus of their efforts. Soon enough would come, the discussion of strategy. The four warriors felt their commitment however; they were no longer driven in desperation. They were all aware of the fact that what was to be would be in its own time. Their only chore now, was never exit the path and they would arrive at its destination.

Having completed their repast the effort of cleaning up the result took precedence, and all fulfilled their role in unison. Time found them all, once again seated on the patio. Here it was Myself, who once again took the floor. He began by stating, “Yesterday, I was explaining the implications of education and how we must use it for our goals. This morning I shall complete this vital outline in hope we find we are in accord. Are there any questions about what I presented yesterday?” He glanced about and noted nobody was confused.

“Excellent, it is amazing that four individuals can achieve a like consensus and perhaps we can bring all to such insight.”
“As we are in agreement of the importance of education, I wish to give it structure for the accomplishment of its impact. Somewhere I heard it said, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ and this seems a very wise and insightful observation. It then becomes our goal to insure this village is open and receptive to this approach. The efforts, Sachem has initiated, towards community involvement need a simple push to take this inclusive step. In order to implement this idea we shall have to establish guidelines, which guarantee our schools operate at their maximum potential in this matter. Teaching is not a job; rather it is a calling, not based on curriculum but the desire to share the wonder of knowledge. True teachers are the most valuable resource of any society and as such need acknowledgement and reward. Their value is such it represents the future of the children, the nation, and the world. I defy you to find a more vital
role for any to assume. What this is all about is exciting the children to think. Opening their minds with curiosity and then showing them the path to the answers. In doing this there is a tool kit, which must be handed to every child. This kit is made up of the foundation skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. To accomplish the building of this kit it should be clear the presence of the child is required. I speak of not just the child’s physical presence, but the mental presence as well. So, how do we achieve this presence?”

“I think it very important to think back to our childhood and reflect. What were our enticements and why? The need to know ‘why’ is displayed by every child in its developmental stage of questions. This is the time professionals need access with simple logical answers, which shall lead to the complexities of future ‘whys.’ Think about the parent’s role, and how it is filled with a full schedule, just for survival. This is especially true in our first generation in Whynot. Once we have nurtured one generation in this manner we shall have a society fully armed with the tools to feed this curiosity. Teachers must instill fun in this effort of leading children to seeing, for that is truly what teaching is, the showing each child how to think on their own, and enjoy it.”

“Key to this is reward, and acknowledgement, which creates a special sense that child, is wanted and special to that teacher. Reward can be as simple as a word; acknowledgement must start at day one. On the first day of school, the teacher must be armed with detailed information on their students. The first day is to be spent taking each child aside and explaining to them just how happy that teacher is to have them in class. There must then be one day a month where this is done and something good about each child must be pointed out to them. It must then be reinforced at every level of advance. For the entire time of education, these conversations must be held, and they are to be always positive. When these two combine, that child shall nestle in the warmth of feeling wanted and special. Going to school will then become a joy not to be missed for any reason. This is what we must build, or we fail our children, thus we fail the world and ourselves,” Myself looked about for reaction to his words. The initial silence caused him pause and to reflect perhaps he was off base.

It was Sachem, who broke the silence saying, “I have been honored by the Creator to know all three of you, however, Big Heart, truly, I can place no Sage or Wizard of my acquaintance above you. Yours is an old and mighty soul with a vision beyond my years of existence. I am chastened by my failure to recognize this fact when we met. Perhaps these concepts are the way, and ‘you’ are the door. I must admit I do not know, however, if you point I shall go and if you lead I shall follow.”

Myself, turned a brilliant shade of red and was tongue tied in his effort to demure. “Quit it,” he managed, “I am just spouting off and hoping not to make a fool of me. Without you three I don’t exist because it is your acceptance, which means my words have value.” I chimed in adding, “Sachem is right Myself, for even in your denial you have expressed an insight of awesome clarity.” Me stood up and faced Myself, “We have discussed this phenomenon and our joint conclusion is, we failed to ever know you, and we are sorry for the time we lost. That you were so invisible, behind your persona of nonchalance and carefree demeanor, demonstrates a power far greater than that processed by the rest of us. That we did not know is amazing, we two who have known you the longest agree with our new friend. Point and we follow lead and we will be there. It never entered my thoughts, or I’s what would occur when we handed you this concept. We thought you would take the package and hand back a sales plan. Instead, we handed you a seed and up sprang a garden, a garden of thoughts and insights that constantly feed our souls. This occurrence has turned a remarkably journey into a miraculous education.”

Tears streamed down Myself’s face as he stated, “I have been so concerned I was just rambling, and I just hoped my efforts weren’t embarrassing. You three mean so much to me, and if you had rejected my thoughts, I do not know how I could have handled it. You all give too much credit; after all without you leading how could I have arrived here.” Sachem shook his head in amazement, “Every great Sage, and Wizard I have known, always retained that kernel of doubt. Yes, they had great assurance but even then, they questioned. That I believe is greatness the questioning, seeking and yet proceeding to find a path. Always, they point to others for their accomplishments. Is it true humbleness, or misdirection, I feel we will never know and it really does not matter?”

CHAPTER 36

FINALIZED FORMS

The rest of the day was filled with individual contemplation and occasional meetings for clarification of tactics. It was agreed tomorrow would begin with Sachem’s departure for, the purpose of implementing their agenda. They further acknowledged that Me, Myself, and I should assume an active but restrained involvement in this effort. It was felt their presence was required in order that all four would remain in accord with what was transpiring. Should adjustment be required they would be available to input their information in an on the spot manner. It was noted this was to be a long road to travel and there were no exits allowed.

Remarkably all four felt a peacefulness and acceptance they had done a good job thus far.
I decided to quench his curiosity while the opportunity existed and so asked, “Sachem was it really you who brought my visions to me?” Sachem acknowledged this fact and went on to explain, “If it had not been me it would have been someone or something else. These visions were foretold and thus were required of you. Nothing could have interfered with these events. You are ‘Far Seer’ and
for some reason unknown, it was for you this chore was intended. The ways of the Creator are not to be understood they are to be followed. If we stay the course long enough perhaps, enlightenment is achieved. I cannot say, but it is my hope this is true. Would that not be a monumental happenstance?

I often ponder what such an occurrence would entail; the range of understanding is perhaps beyond the ability to encompass. It is okay to think on this a little; however, to dwell on this possibility would surely cause madness. It is enough for me to, just hope it might be.”

Me, decided to ask about his curiosity, “Myself has told us of soaring over the developing earth with you, how, was this done?” Sachem explained, “This is done by the releasing of self and vehicle. That is, when you are capable of stepping outside of the boundaries of the vehicle you inhabit. All humanity has this ability but it remains clouded by the dogma of their world.

Humankind is essence in a vessel much like milk in a bottle and just as that milk, is very much able to be poured out, and set free. Once free from your vessel there are no limits to your abilities. You may soar forward or back in time or, if you choose to the far reaches of eternity. It is even possible to be all places at all times. I must state this should not be done until considerable experience has been gained. Imagine going from solitary confinement to infinite freedom instantly. The shock of this event could well be catastrophic.

I am pleased you asked this question, for I have been contemplating the use of this ability, for you to monitor some of our efforts.” This brought an excited barrage of question from Me, and I. Both were intrigued at the prospect of such an adventure.
“When are we going to do it?” they entreated in unison.
“That too remains to be seen,” was the enigmatic response.

Both I and Me were crestfallen at this disclaimer and tried hard not to show their disappointment. Sachem smiled at their efforts and mollified them somewhat by adding, “Sooner than later.” Myself was noting the perfection of the day. It was warm but not hot, clear, perfect in all respects.

He noted this fact by stating, “Thanksgiving draws near, and if this day presages our efforts I feel we shall have much to give thanks for.” This was so unanimously agreed upon they began discussion of an appropriate celebration. It was soon agreed a community event would be a good foundation stone for their efforts. Sachem suggested this event highlight cultural aspects of their community. It would be an excellent opportunity to tear down any barriers currently nurtured by members of their tribe. It must be set up to display each cultures foods and customs but it must be done in away all people are led to circulate and indulge in these presentations. This is especially true for the children, for this can go along way towards erasing any seeds of prejudice inadvertently sprouting in their fertile minds.

After agreeing to this endeavor, it was further decided there should not be just an annual event, but individual events throughout the year. Each culture would highlight their heritage, food and customs and all members of the community were responsible to be involved in the planning of these events. “Very shortly it will be possible to spot any who are resistant to the acceptance required for our communities future goals,” stated I. Those who are so imbued with the poison of prejudice can either be educated or failing that, banished from our efforts. This is harsh and I feel the benefits gained by our concepts will convince most to modify their attitudes. This is one of our primary goals so we must grant every opportunity for this to occur.”

This was agreed to by all four and it was further stated, “Kindness and opportunity, individual acknowledgement is our goal. When we have a clear attitude change, it should be acknowledged by the community at large. This should be an event worthy of newspaper coverage and public award, a constant reinforcement of positive values and every effort to dissuade negative values. The conversations of the day continued like vein until Sachem declared,

“At first our efforts must be explained, as for the tribe, and not to be discussed out of our community. It can be explained why we do this and all should be brought into this conspiracy for change. If we make this a great adventure, our odds will be improved for accomplishing this end. As for the occasional misfit who leaves our fold, I do not think they will have a strong enough voice to harm us. This is an acceptable level of danger and if need be we can dissuade any who come questioning.”

Soon the time was upon them for the evening meal and Sachem surprised them by displaying a pit in which a pig had been roasting all day. Shortly, they became aware of the effort Sachem had gone to in order to make this victory meal a crowning event to their planning. Yams, potatoes, native greens and panoply of foods had been secretly cooking for their repast. Myself, bemoaned the fact they would soon be left to their own resources for the preparation of meals. Me and I were also struggling with the fact, “There is no way around it, this fact is the only draw-back to this effort.” This declaration caused smiles all around and the next hours were spent in gustatory decadence.

CHAPTER 37

WHIRLWINDS

The fields needed cultivation in preparation for the coming planting. On this morning, the four, farmers of the future, silently consumed a sparse breakfast. Each was lost to introspection on their role in the coming seeding of society. Gone were the days of planning and before them was viewed the monumental chore to come. There were no doubts, for all were silently austere in their commitment to this effort. Upon concluding their meal and the resultant clean up, Sachem stretched to his full height and proclaimed, “I shall take my leave to begin my task of implementing our goals. As all meetings are open public affairs, you will know when the time comes for your presence to be required. After each of these events, I shall appear among you and we shall discuss the efficacy of my efforts. We are aware these efforts shall never cease but our work now is the construction of an enduring foundation.”

Sachem outlined his beginning agenda declaring the matters of property ownership, and education of primary importance. Meeting no disagreement, he expanded his thoughts by stating, “I must instill these two foundation stones and yet leave the door open for inclusion of future advances for community benefit. This initial effort is one we shall need to monitor the closest for if these are done true all that follows shall be naturally occurring expansion.” Looking about he perceived no resistance to his statements and thus he shook his fellow warrior’s hand and departed their company.

Me, Myself, and I felt a deep sense of loss at his departure. Logically they knew it was time but their feelings were from the passing of a glorious phase of their lives into the unknown. It was Myself, who defined this feeling, “Do you two realize it has been less than two weeks since we witlessly stepped onto this path? Would we have taken that step if we had known it would lead to here?” Me responded by avowing, “My belief is firm. There is no doubt in my mind; we had no more choice than leaves before the gale. My newfound understanding of you two leaves no room for considering failure. Once we saw the truth, our basic honor would have never allowed us not to respond. If you recall your notes of meeting Sachem then you will remember his comment about becoming that we were meant to be.

My friends’ that is what has occurred and it is exciting. While we shall miss Sachem that is merely our minds noting the physical absence and when we accept we four are forever joined by purpose, that shall fade. I cannot perceive of a time when we shall not be joined. A connection closer than blood, for our tie was chosen and founded in truth.”

These thoughts dissipated the melancholy and soon all three were involved in a discussion of their roles. It was agreed that in the foreseeable, future all three would reside at I’s house. This would facilitate communication and expedite the speed required for decisions. “Well, what do we do now? Me queried. After a period of silence I responded, “You know we have done well in deciding how our society should be structured but we have failed to address what our society needs. What we should work on for that problem is the recruitment of new people to fill vital positions in our structure. We must form a complete society, which is self sufficient for its survival. This means our societal segments must be filled with motivated people who are pursuing the paths they enjoy. Correct my opinion, if you disagree, but I feel the design for this fulfillment is in the purview of Me’s expertise, and the actual recruitment will fall into Myself’s, realm. Me, you need to research what talents we have and what talents we need.

A well-rounded community needs a balance of doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs is what I am saying. It will be Me’s chore to determine what that balance is for our needs today and as best possible our needs for the future. Create a shopping list of professions which Myself, can take into the world hunting. Myself, it is important you do not rush in this endeavor, take all the time needed to find the right people for our goals.

Me was the first to respond, “I you are on the money with your vision again, after all the whole purpose of a foundation is to build on. If you will excuse me, I shall get on this matter now. As he left the room, Myself gave his agreement by adding, “I’m going to miss the action here, but you are right we need a complete society in order to not give outside influence the opportunity to grasp our purpose. This will be a time consuming search but rest assured I’ll take ever caution and safe guard to secure the right people.” I stated his confidence in Myself’s abilities and promised to keep a record of occurrences in Whynot in order that Myself, could remain abreast of developments.

The following days were filled with analysis and research for Me, and he spent every second on his task. He understood the importance of his effort and allowed no interruptions of his work. When approached or questioned he would resort to a brusque deflection by stating, “This too remains to be seen.” Soon both his friends determined to leave him be and wait his conclusions. The ideal structure of people for their community was his goal and to accomplish that he was developing a shopping list. This list was not for the acquisition of things, but people. Doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers and especially farmers, a compendium of humanity required for a balanced community. For this effort, he resorted to researching existing communities all over the nation. Minute analysis was applied to this study in hopes of finding the ideal. Failing in this effort, he then resorted to the application of commonsense and reason and in this way, his list was expanding to its conclusion.

I and Me had spent a great deal of the time in discussion of the overall needs and the refinements required to achieve them. At one point all three were called to a community meeting initiated by Sachem. Here they were delighted and entertained by Sachem’s adroit manipulation of the society. In a very theatric manner, he had initiated a discussion of community property. As expected, this topic had generated great interest and controversy.

Sachem allowed the discussion to rise to a crescendo before standing to full height. As always this event brought on complete silence and rapt attention. Sachem then succinctly outlined a tribal format of ownership and the application of the benefits they had agreed to. Overwhelming acceptance was instantaneous and enthusiastic. The general population was totally in thrall to Sachem’s character portrayal. Like children playing cowboys and Indians, with the citizens playing Indians, they adopted the proposals of their Sage.It could be noticed over the next few days, these people had thought on this plan and the initial enthusiasm climbed to an amazed peak of approbation. During a brief meeting with Sachem, the three cohorts stated their pleasure in his virtuoso performance.

They also informed him of the efforts of Me, and Myself. Sachem concurred and said he had wondered about this need and was pleased to see it being addressed. Me, informed them tomorrow he would complete the shopping list and it would be time for Myself’s departure. Sachem wished them best wishes and all went their own way.

CHAPTER 38

GOING TO MARKET

Dawn’s magical erasure of darkness once again saw the three who are one in attendance. The awaited display of Father Sun springing from the eastern horizon filled the watchers with awe. In hushed tones, they beheld this event with a sense of reverence. This was the birth of a new day, and all three agreed each day’s birth unique. The time of waiting was over and their discussion was focused on the papers presented by Me. As Me explained his findings, I and Myself were once again amazed at the degree of detail he had delineated. Myself was unable to contain his comments and intoned, “Me it must be said, you do not do a fast job and definitely you never do a half fast job so it is safe to assume you have done a through job.” I and Me, could only shake their heads in acceptance. I responded, “Myself, what would we do without your trenchant observations, half fast indeed?” The three friends chuckled at the witticism and allowed Me to continue.

Me opened his presentation by explaining his methodology, “My focus was on the structure of as many representative small communities as possible. I analyzed the percentage makeup of their populations and positions of employment. In this way, it was my hope to discover an ideal balance of structure. Failing in this, I then combined their structures and extracted the mean values for each area of service. In this way, I achieved a composite value and used this as my guideline when applying values to our community. I feel this method has allowed me to achieve the values closest to ideal as possible.

I then considered land usage and compared it to population, again combining all figures and calculating the mean. In, this way I developed, what I hope is the maximum population for our community, based on the land available.

I and Myself listened in amazement at these disclosures. Myself was, for once, serious in his response, “We have never even considered such a thing, and however, you are right. No matter the foundation, it is always possible to build beyond its capacity and therefore must be considered.” I displayed his curiosity by declaring, “Please continue as my curiosity is getting the better of me.”

Me continued his narration, “I took the values of land to population and adjusted them for our needs and the figure I arrived at was thirty-five thousand people or approximately two thirds of an acre for each citizen’s wellbeing.”
“Two thirds of an acre,” was the surprised response of his two friends.
“Yes, this figure is based on ability to feed and provide industrial expanse in order to maintain full employment.

A further consideration, which maybe more important is space. I viewed one hundred large population centers in this model and concluded space was necessary for a healthy society.” Both Myself, and I asked in unison, “Please explain exactly what you mean.” Me calmly stated, “If you would quit putting your mouth over your ears, I will.” Chided by this out of character, response of Me’s, I and Myself promised their attention.

“In the effort of studying these large population centers I noted a curious anomaly. This became glaringly apparent as I progressed from the founding of these communities to their current condition. This anomaly begins its appearance at a point when the population reaches a density considerable beyond, where I have established our upper limits. This perceived anomaly is crime and violence; these seem to expand exponentially after a certain level of concentration occurs.

This is complex and nebulous therefore I must give both a pro and con explanation. It is clear from my studies; multiple causes are involved in this phenomenon. I shall attempt to present these factors in a simple yet concise overview. Once population reaches the described levels, we have a situation in which survival is dependant upon employment within the system. We are all well aware of our current systems failure to ensure this ability, and the usage of welfare to supplement this end.

Here I am guessing but common sense tells me this creates a situation where adults feel useless and frustrated. They are not the providers of their families needs and shame creates hostility. Remember our discussion about the masking value of land in our early development, how it kept the disparity of wealth and worth in check? The value of this fact appears blatant in my studies. If each person has space, enough to produce food, this appears to mollify the need to provide and aids physical and mental health. An outlet for the frustration of devaluation is provided and a healthier society results.”

“A curious aside to these discoveries is this appears to be an American phenomenon, as you do not see this occurring in China, or India both of which have far greater density? However, it must be noted they also have centuries of adaptation and outlets have been developed, we do not have. Like apples and oranges so I left these conclusions alone. Here and now is our focus and that was my effort.”

I and Myself nodded and affirmed, “We will accept your conclusions and base our efforts on this model.”

“Excellent, then let me continue,” Me responded. “All right then to our shopping list. At our current population, we need two doctor’s, one who specializes in pediatrics, and one G.P., we need six more nurses, seven teachers, on and on Me reeled off the list of personnel needs. In rapt admiration, his friends listened to this discourse until Me stated. “These are the needs of our current population including our immediate future.

However, in order to meet our future needs we must install a system of observation in our educational system, which pinpoints tendencies and desires of our youth. As a community, we must then nurture these tendencies and provide the support necessary for these desires to reach fulfillment. In other words, we must produce our own needs from the garden of our community. Over time, this production will exceed our needs and this shall be the spearhead of our expansion. These excess resources must be
encouraged to migrate into other areas and be spokespersons for our goals.

They shall explore and report communities, which are open to new ideas. We then continue to populate and educate these communities until the time we can offer them the benefits of our system. We, as a community, shall always count them among our citizenry and maintain an address for our explorer’s and in this way, we will be able to claim a community, which shall reach the population figures, we require for our power base. However, we cannot expect all of this expansion to be held as citizens of this community, so we must begin establishing existing small communities we can inhabit and instill our values, adding them to our power base. We can assume there are many of these, which while close in ideology simply need the injection of our system for their ascension. As we discussed, these shall be linked through a communication system established through our newspapers.”

Both I and Myself continued in their amazement and I retorted, “This developmental agenda has been much on my mind. I should have known you would resolve it in your usual detail oriented manner. You have defined the final pieces of our effort and it is my belief we need to start building.”

For the next several hours, Myself, was busy studying the shopping list, and discussing all of its parameters with Me. Having reached a joint consensus, he focused on the efforts required to sustain an extended stay away from his community. The conclusion of his efforts precipitated a mutual sense of melancholy at his impending departure. The sun seemed to glint excessively from the eyes of all three as, for the time or departure, mutual hugs of genuine love were given. Myself’s voice, hoarse with emotion declared, “Hmmm, well no sense dawdling about, I’ve work to do. None was fooled by this brusque goodbye and genuine words of concern accompanied his departure. As there was no time-line, none could realize the passing of a year would pass before they were reunited.

Me glanced at I and noted his mien was dejected, he intoned, “Hey my friend, we have no time for sorrow we must focus on tomorrow.” I brightened somewhat and replied, “As a poet you stink.” This brought the needed relief of laughter and they agreed there was plenty to be done so they determined to have fun. In an aside they added, “We will miss that clown.” and they turned to their task.

CHAPTER 39

ONE DAY AT A TIME

One day at a time, this was their goal. Each day brought about an expansion of their goals and the progress was remarkable. Sachem went beyond their wildest dreams in the achievement of structuring their community. In this manner late fall passed and winter too gave ground to the clocks advance. Often they found themselves curious about Myself and his efforts. They had only had one obscure message from him in the last five months. His only reference to his goal was a cryptic sentence saying, “This is the season of their discontent.”

After much discussion, the three remaining warriors decided he either meant people were unhappy or unhappy with him. It was agreed Myself, could be a pain without even trying. I summed up their thoughts by saying, “He leaves us hoist on his petard. Damn that guy, would it hurt him to impart some information. He knows we don’t doubt his success but it would sure be assuring to hear him say so.” Even the enigmatic Sachem was susceptible to curiosity and acknowledged as much, “He was my student and now he is my teacher. That can only make me wonder if I too was so obtuse. I must remember this experience if ever I take on another student, because this is frustrating.”

As to their progress, there were no complaints. It seemed the population was absorbing the concepts and structures as fast as Sachem placed them on the table. The land distribution was functioning smoothly and while ready cash was limited, all citizens gave what they could. This was duly recorded and held for their futures. Me had developed the Neighborhood of First and Last Americans Tribal Organization with strict guidelines and full non-profit Corporation rules and laws in effect.

They had not yet been able to Charter their own bank however, they were in serious negotiations with a local bank in the next community. These negotiations were for, the purpose of buying this bank while insuring a lifetime income for the current owners. Further, they were dangling their retirement account concepts in front of these owners as a special carrot. While not stating this was a boon for these people, only they allowed them to come to this conclusion. If things went smoothly this goal should be met in the next thirty days. It had been agreed when this happened they would open up the bank for all depositors to enjoy these benefits. This would begin their expansion on a limited basis and secure the friendship and cooperation of their neighbors. Yes, it could be said things were going very well, that is if their wayward clown would only check in.

In the beginning, every person who had come to this community had given all their worldly goods. For some this did not equal any great sacrifice however, for others they offered up substantial sums. Me, Myself, and I had committed every penny of their holdings of cash and this of it’s self, equaled a great sum. These facts meant income was still low but resources were high. These were being put to work on the infrastructure of their economy and stores, shops, and all manner of industry were springing up. Of these the chief project was a food, processing facility designed for and held equally by all citizens. This facility would process every type of produce raised in their thirty square miles of farming property. This facility would provide internal supplies of food as well as export products to be sold in the surrounding communities. This facility was designed to meet all FDA standards and would eventually provide a wide range of work for the citizens and be a driving force in fueling many other
enterprises.

Another project, which had come from a dream of I and been, fleshed out by the combined efforts of Me, and Jay Miller, their resident graduate student of engineering. Jay was an original member of their community and yet had elected to continue his education in engineering. This required a considerable commute southward to the University of California at Davis and it was here he worked on his thesis involving their project.

I had envisioned a community, which was self-contained in production of electricity, and heating concerns. The uniqueness of this approach required slow and painstaking development and testing effort before implementation. As each phase was tested, proven, and utilized, they became more and more convinced of its efficacy. The goal was the use of methane gas for generating electricity and the by-product of heat would be piped to each home and business in the community. Thermostatic heat registers could be set for the level of heat comfort required by each recipient. The ducting for this heat was being installed simultaneously with the installation of the underground sewage system, which fuelled this endeavor.

Yes, sewage fuel was the energy applied towards their goal. Instead of this sewage being processed and dumped into the waterways, it was first sent to a gigantic collection and mixing pond. This pond was enclosed in a huge expandable gas storage structure surrounded by fifty-foot thick containment levees. The mixing ensured the inclusion of all matter and the inflow always was metered to equal the outflow. At the furthest reaches of the facility was the electric generation and heat production unit.

Here the methane was to be burned, and produce steam, which would turn turbines generating electricity. In conjunction with the steam pipes, was a heat pipe grid, which took in fresh air and after heating, this was delivered back down the installed heat pipes to the community. Each setback only served to fuel Jay’s determination and his resourcefulness was slowly winning the day.

It was Me’s job to establish operational guidelines for the operation of this enterprise, on its completion. He wanted this to work very much for it was here he could blow out any claims of communism or socialism. It was true every citizen owned this effort but it was still to be a profit generating operation. However, in this effort, once overhead had been covered the profit would be funneled into
the citizen’s retirement account on a percentage basis of their usage. Free enterprise, but used for all the people, and not just the few. This just had to work because on the day they opened the curtains on their community this would be a jewel in their crown.

CHAPTER 40

NO STONE UNTURNED

Myself, forced his thoughts to stay on the goals laid out before him. This was necessary in order to keep the melancholy, of departure, at bay. His was a lonely venture yet one vital for their success and he focused on this fact.

His first stop was to be the community of Chico a short distance from their home. Chico was a small community whose population swelled each fall with the influx of students to Chico State College. Chico State College was ideally suited to fulfill several of the needs on their shopping list. CSC was well respected as a teacher’s college as well as having a strong agricultural curriculum. These were two of the needs, which ranked high on their list of needs. He realized thirty square miles would necessitate the addition of quite a number of agricultural personnel.

Myself, wasted no time in beginning his quest. Securing a room in one of the many Motels lining the Esplanade, he deposited his luggage and then made his way to the campus. As always, when visiting Chico, he was cognizant of the abundance of trees. He was curious, if flying over the town, could you tell it was a town, or would its appearance be that of an arboreal oasis. The BLM or bookstore was his goal, for he felt by watching the choice of personal books bought, he could gain insight into the individuals. For the following week, he divided his time between the bookstore down stairs and the Student Union upstairs.

Occasional time was also given to monitoring classes specific to his needs. He sought not to just get impressions of the personalities of likely individuals he further worked at imprinting their images. Myself was well aware of CSC’s reputation as a party town and it was at these functions he would approach his target quarry. Myself was a natural early riser, which would make his transformation to night stalker a difficult chore. On the selected eve of this transformation, he forced himself to stay awake as late as possible. Upon arising, he donned sweats and made his way to the College track where he proceeded to run five miles and then indulge in several hours of pick-up basketball. Completely worn out by his efforts he returned to his room and fell into a restful sleep. In this way, he managed to alter his sleeping pattern and prepare to search the night for his individuals of interest.

The ensuing months were then confined to
finding, meeting, and evaluating his choices. Myself was amazed at the time required to complete this interviewing endeavor. After all this effort completed, he found fifty people had been selected, and sold on the concepts of Whynot. This figure included forty graduating seniors and ten graduate students completing their course of study. He concluded his time in Chico by establishing a time for meeting in Whynot and he further encouraged his selections to take time to visit the community and make their intentions known.

Myself, then continued his quest and headed for the small town of Davis and it was here his only communication with his friends was initiated. The process began all over and in its course, he bumped into Jay Miller where they shared information and Myself sent his greeting to Whynot. The University of California at Davis, Berkeley, Stanford Medical, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Fresno State University, on and on a blur of meetings, evaluations, and recruiting effort.

Myself felt totally drained by his efforts and he found his mind turning towards home. More and more his thoughts were of his founding refuge and during these thoughts, he could not grasp the passage of ten months of his life. He thumbed through his list of names. Three thousand people had verbally committed to his enticement, but he would be eminently happy if half of them actually responded.

These were not all students, for some of his efforts had been pointed at older and retired people. These were vital to provide the wisdom needed for the growth ahead. This group, he had no worries about for their word was their bond.

Among the students the medical personnel were the only ones in which he felt confidence. This was due to the enticement of help paying their student loans, and the promise they would be prominent players in the founding of Whynot’s hospital. He also could promise to provide the needed residency they would need for fully accredited status. While Whynot did not yet have the facilities to secure this residency, He knew they had the funds to endow local hospitals to entice them to meet this commitment. His travels were not yet complete; however, his direction of travel would be north.

Having made his decision to head back over his path, he felt a sense of happiness. Home, what a wonderful word, and he determined to hold it dear in his efforts of return, and with this thought he managed his first full nights sleep. Touching-base was how he viewed this return trip. A few days here,
a few days there and always seeking to inspire the level of enthusiasm needed to spur his selections to take up his offer. His realization, on his travels south, was clear and accepting. He was dealing with youth and thoughts of tomorrow came low on their expectation list.

Amazed at the diversity he had encountered traveling the length of the state filled his thoughts. The further north you were, the more grounded the students had seemed. Myself, attributed this to their roots. Most had been nurtured in rural settings and their values reflected this fact. The more populated the setting the more frivolous the approach to life. He realized this to be a generalization, but his experience indicated an increase of this phenomenon, percentage wise, did exist.

Speaking to himself he muttered, “I have never been on this road before.” This made him smile as he recalled saying these words to I, and Me when returning from Eureka. Weeks of hunting, discussing, directing his recruits, passed and according to his records, he was successful in finding about fifty percent. Of these, approximately half expressed their intent to move to his community and had prepared to this end.

Almost a year had passed and Myself, felt homesick, and disheartened, on his final leg to Whynot. He was sure he had failed his charge and had no answer about what to do. Fifty percent of fifteen hundred people was seven hundred and fifty people a figure far below their hoped for numbers. “Well all things are as they are supposed to be,” he thought and his heart flooded with joy at the vision of Whynot coming into view. Perhaps he would be required to undertake another shopping trip. This did not please him but such was life and a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

CHAPTER 41

A FACE IN THE CROWD

Mesmerized, awe filled perusal, incredulity and more, what was the jewel he beheld? A mythic stonecutter had faceted this raw material and he viewed the diamond in amazed contemplation. Driving far slower than the pedestrians were walking, his eyes opened wide, he perused the transformation of his thoughts into fact. Everywhere he glanced the stuff of his dreams took the form of reality. What power could have bequeathed this dream to existence? Recognition tore through the fabric of his thoughts and he found himself nodding to familiar faces.

Where had these faces come from? For they were not the faces of those people he had left behind when undertaking his journey. Slowly his thoughts broke the surface of the morass of his confusion. Relief, a floodtide, washed his melancholy until he shone with a dawning awareness of success. These were the faces of his quest, the missing fifty percent, he had been unable to contact on his return journey. His speed advanced and his direction assumed the flight of an arrow, straight it flew to the residence of his friend I. It was here he knew he would find both I and Me and with them the answers to his confusion.

Upon parking in front of I’s home he struggled to control the laughter which had, unbidden, possessed his final miles. Home, how remarkable was that sensation and his eyes drank in the sight of I, Me, and Sachem bursting from the doorway. The confusion of their first words was a palliative to his soul.

“My God, Myself, it is great to have you home. You have exceeded our wildest hopes. Not one, of the influx of people you sent, has been found wanting. What a remarkable thing you have accomplished,” these words, a babble from the mouths of all three. Myself exited the car and all four were clasped in a circle of dancing success. It was Sachem, who asked about the thoughts, which swirled through his mind, “What do you think of our efforts?”

Myself could only shake his head and respond, “I left a thought and returned to its reality. How is it possible so much could occur in so little time?” His three friends stood grinning at his surprise. “Work my friend work, that, and belief in a goal, this is the fuel of success and success we shall have,” intoned Me.

“Come, come in, for it is my belief we have hours of conversation before we sleep.” I beckoned them all to his home. Myself, was gratefully surprised to find Sachem had prepared a special meal for homecoming. Myself could not help but ask, “How did you know today was the day of my return?” Sachem laughed at his confusion and broke the tension by his reply, “This too remains to be seen.” It was some time before the uncontrolled mirth was brought under control.
Myself, finally managed to say, “I thought it was my job to be the wise guy.” To which Me responded, “Well we had to elect a stand-in during your absence and we thought it would do Sachem some good to discover the joke of life. Surprisingly we discovered he already understood he just needed the impetus to express it.”

Myself could not restrain himself, “So I take it your new Totem name is Bob Hope?” The shocked look on Sachem’s face brought his three companions to their knees with laughter. I pointing to Sachem stated, “You should look in a mirror.” Sachem was far from obtuse and after his initial surprise, he too joined the laughter.

He spoke to Myself, saying, “It is truly a fine thing to have you back among us. I know in spirit you have never left us but your spirit did not have such a wise mouth.” The three who are one were silenced by the shock of Sachem’s clearly expressed humor. Then, again gales of laughter rocked the walls of I’s home.

Having broken the ice of reunion and Sachem’s
excellent meal consumed, the four warriors began their mutual debriefing. Through the balance of the day and long into the early hours of morning information flowed in both directions. This process finally wound its way to finality and all sat in silent contemplation. I broke the silence when he declared, “We shall win, my every thought declares, we shall win.”

There was a chorus of assent as all expressed a like belief. Myself, asked a question, which had been much in his thoughts, “Did Sachem take you soaring in order for you to see your goals being fulfilled?” Before the others could respond Sachem intoned, “My words were ‘Sooner than later’ and when we awake, sooner shall be upon on us. It was not necessary for our needs, that, required belief, however, as reward it is necessary, it is necessary for our souls and hearts to view what we have wrought.”

This filled the three who are one with a pulsing sense of anticipation. I stated their feelings, “Now how do you expect us to sleep with that prospect facing us?”
“Why I expect you to sleep well,” was Sachem’s flip retort. Myself not to be out done replied, “Well then I guess it is time to fall into the well, right Bob?”

Again, Sachem’s shock at this appellation again brought them to uncontrolled laughter. Myself, satisfied with his results, led them to the time of sleep with his declaration, “As for me, give me liberty and sleep. It has been a long year and a trying day. It would not do to go flying while fatigued, and so to you I bid goodnight.” Sachem tendered his approval and retired the field graciously, “I surrender to an eminently superior wise-guy, and I look forward to the exercise of wings.”

Standing to retire, I, and Me were suddenly acutely aware of their fatigue and offered no resistance. Soon the house was dark and silent, Sachem sat crossed legged in deep thought. Yes, he thought they should win; however, it is not clear if they shall ever view their victory. With these thoughts, he awaited the victory flight.

CHAPTER 42

CLOSING THOUGHTS, SOARING DREAMS

Sleep, but a brief respite, before a nodding hello to the glowing light. The flaring Sun, so clean, and bright as it purposefully sweeps remnants, of that scoundrel night. A blink, a nod, rose they then, with eyelids high, in anticipation of soaring that glorious sky. The three who are one awoke renewed. Sleeps brief hold they all refused, striding with a purposeful gait they sought the Sachem who did wait. Like children at Christmas, the three friends awoke as though to a clanging bell.

Hurrying from their lairs, they were greeted by the fragrance of readied food and fresh coffee. Once again, Sachem, having anticipated their waking, had all in readiness. Conversation was light as they consumed their meal. I and Me, both commented on the slight bitterness of the coffee, to which, Myself, merely smiled. The ablutions completed, upon the ware, they waited, with anticipation, Sachem's will. Sachem beckoned them to follow as he exited the house and walked onto the patio. There they discovered a very smoky fire, and Sachem indicated they were to be seated. Having followed Sachems lead, soon all three were falling under the spell of his monotone recitation of their past adventures and future goals.

One-by-one their heads dropped and their chins rested upon their breasts. One second seated and the next soaring high above their town. There was no fear for there was no sense their position was not secure. “Amazing,” was I’s response. Me’s analytical mind sought to clarify, “You say this ability to step outside ourselves exists in all humans?”

“Yes, this is part of the specialism, the Creator delineated just for humankind. Do not focus on your feat; rather look at your child spread below.” At this all, four gazed with pride upon the jewel, which had sprung from their visions and work. “This is good and true,” stated Sachem, “however it is, but a seed, and watching its growth shall take years.

My task is nearing completion, and slowly my visits shall be fewer and fewer again. Still to come, is my written words, which shall cover that, which I have said, and that, which is to come. These are to be held in secret and only brought out for the future Sachems of the tribe to learn. I have seen the events, which will foretell the day of unveiling and this must be watched for. I do not know the time of this happening just the nature and words, which will herald it’s occurrence. As I slowly fade from the operation of your effort, the mystery, which has rested with me, shall be transferred to this book and my legend. “Are you saying we won’t see you anymore?” questioned the three.

“No,” replied Sachem, “for, we shall know each other forever. While I have other chores, and at times shall be absent, my sole purpose is for your goals. Silently they observed their community and were excited for its success. Then at Sachem’s request, they followed him. Instantly they found themselves high above the Sutter Buttes, and Sachem pointed to his favorite aerie. From there, I have observed for great time and as you can see any sign, my presence is needed, I will note. Even should I be far away, leaving you in stewardship, I shall know of your need. Victory has joined us in common cause for its assurance. Nothing less than failure can break that bond, and failure can only appear, should we quit? ‘Never quit, for when you quit you are dead, still walking around maybe, yet still dead.’ The truth of the Butte Wizard,” he stated.

Slowly they settled to the ground and gazed from the heights of South Butte. The vista was a sweeping panorama of the cornucopia of the valley floor. Their hearts were filled with hope, and Me spoke his thoughts, “We took the truth ‘Nothing good comes from the top down,’ and thus we built our foundation strong.”

Myself added his words by pledging, “Until all humankind is brought into the abundance of the Creator we have failed and failure is not acceptable.”

I summed up the hopes and dreams of them all with his words, “We have found the seeds, we have tilled the fields, the crop is planted, and now the waiting for the harvest begins. Should we see that day, so be it, for my needs, it is enough that it shall come. What a glory the day will be when the curtains of our endeavor are spread wide and this greeting rings out to all humankind, ‘WELCOME TO WHYNOT, CALIFORNIA, where it is all about you”
