Title:
as a twig is bent...
Our gloomy perceptions of grey, opaque raindrops tracking slowly down a window pane are something that we were taught. Dark, rainy days, and sounds of cars swishing by on wet streets make most of us feel blue. Our opinions of dogs barking, and howling at the moon beyond the black iron gates of a cemetery is not one of joy and happiness.
Why is rain a negative image in our minds? Couldn't it just as easily be a positive image?
Why is sunshine and blue sky an image of happiness? Couldn't it just as easily be something that makes us sad? Who was the first one to say that sunshine is good and rain is bad?
In some ways, our perceptions of the world around us appear to be things that we have been taught, not something that we can make up our own minds about. That's not very fair. But we all go with the flow and don't really question it.
If you say blue is sad, and black is hateful and mean to everyone, and yellow is both cheerful and cowardly, and green is envious and horny, and red is angry with me, I guess I'll just have to take your word for it, because if you think about it, even if the world got all these perceptions wrong, it would be way too much work to go back and undo all the paradigms about colors and moods and weather we've learned over the centuries.
.. and I have a feeling that nobody would listen to reason anyway.
Puppies and kittens, and all manner of furry creatures are cute and cuddly, but couldn't they just as easily be things that we fear rather than love? Who decided that we would associate "cute" with small fuzzy things that have big brown eyes? Why is that cute and not, scary, for example?
Strange thing to ponder, yes, but it's interesting to me to think that if just one of those old bearded guys in the dawn of time had looked at a storm cloud in a slightly different frame of mind, we all might be completely reversed in our perceptions.
People would receive slaps across the face to celebrate their birthdays instead of getting gifts. A middle finger would mean "great job!", and a wave would mean "up yours!" A smiley face sent out in an email would be an insult to the recipient. A hug would be a personal attack on someone, and the world would love Saddam Hussein and hate the Pope.
