THE PROUD MAN: a sonnet


Is man superior to animals?
Are animals inferior to him?
If we scan the evolution’s annals,
It would appear just to be the man’s whim.

Real superiority lies in
Being able to win adversity.
On this count cockroach would easily win,
Having survived profound diversity.

On the other hand man is so quickly
Destroying himself and the mother earth,
Causing much pollution increasingly,
That one does doubt his ecologic worth.

Man, be not proud that He will favor you.
The creator has other creatures too.


· Cockroaches are an enormously ancient and successful group of insects. The roaches were one of the very first terrestrial insects, appearing during the early Carboniferous era some 280 million years ago.
