Title: Who Would Be A Camel?

Yesterday I left a comment in partyof5dj’s blog about the sad fate suffered by a camel in Istanbul. Quite honestly I have to wonder how on earth this horrible incident happened, and as an animal lover it turned my stomach.

Istanbul is the capital of Turkey, and has a population of almost 12 million! The airport is very busy, a hive of activity. On Tuesday workers for the national airline’s maintenance department decided to celebrate sending a batch of aircraft back to the supplier ahead of schedule. The celebration took place… with the sacrifice of one unfortunate camel on the runway.

I’m glad I don’t have local TV, and neither do I have daily access to the newspapers, because the event received massive coverage here. The newspapers took photographs of the camel before his death, showing him with two rugs covering his hump. They also took photographs of the 700 kilograms of meat removed from the camel and distributed among the workers. The airline is apparently appalled, and has suspended the head of the maintenance division pending and investigation.

I find it amazing that the media managed to be on hand to take these photographs, never mind report upon the entire procedure. But then I guess we shouldn’t expect anything else from the sensationalist section of the press world. While researching this article I found that Sky News – a media group I consider extremely sensationalist and often irresponsible – had recently uncovered some “interesting” questions about the way this airline vets people looking for employment within the organisation. Apparently jobseekers are asked to disclose some very personal details, such as:

1. Do you worship on a regular basis?
2. Do you like flirting?
3. Do you find your own sex attractive?
4. Do you read the Koran a few times a week?
5. Are most of your dreams connected to sex?

Really, I’m hoping Sky News is living up to its reputation, because quite honestly I cannot see how ANY of these questions could possibly affect one’s employment application. In many countries these questions would be considered offensive. If this is true I certainly hope the airline changes its policy quickly!

I found this quote from the man who once ruled Turkey, and was actually the person who authorised the country’s military invasion of the island of Cyprus in 1974. Wise words indeed, and I really do think that they are true… but that order that divided Cyprus into two separate states seems to make them inconsequential and meaningless.

We have proven, Turkey has proven that Islam can be compatible with democracy, with modernity, and even with secularism.
