THE VILLAGE OAKEntry #491221
THE VILLAGE OAK

Once I too was a mighty oak
That ruled the village side,
My stem solid like iron,
My branches far and wide.

My verdant shade was heaven for
The lonely traveler.
I gave succor to all who came,
I refused it never.

But now that I am old and weak
My branches are rotting.
My leaves are no longer shiny.
On dry roots I’m trotting.

I can’t weather any more storms.
I must heed nature’s call.
I stood upright two hundred years.
But now I must, too, fall.
