          It started in March. Or maybe it was May. No, it must have been March. It was just so long ago that I have a hard time remembering.

          It was my senior year, and my boyfriend of two years, Sean, had just dumped me. "Because we're going in two different directions for school," he had said. "Long-distance never works."

          My best friend, Morgan, said my moping was getting on her nerves, and therefore decided, in the same spontaneous fashion that she makes all decisions, that we would take a weekend road trip.

          So that's where we were- on our way home from Arizona, and only miles away from our home in Texas- when it happened. Something ran out into the road.

          To this day, I still don't know what it was. All I remember is a blur of color, light like an armadillo or a possum. Whatever it was, I would have preferred Morgan to hit, instead of jerk the wheel the way she did, especially when, seconds later, we slammed into a tree.

                  That's where it all started.
