Chapter FifteenEntry #529940
Violet wasn't surprised when she heard her door open and close quickly. She could hear the entire fight between her parents and had tried not to start crying. Her mother thought her father was cheating? She knew her father. She knew he would never in his life cheat on her mother.

The bed sank under Pacey's weight and Violet pulled him into her arms. Shouts were still coming from across the hall, so Violet didn't hold him for too long before pulling him out of the bed and helping him out the window.

She almost hesitated to knock on the window. With how strange Drake had been acting, she was worried he would react differently this night. But then she wanted to slap a hand to her forehead. There was nothing in the world that would make Drake turn his back on her and her little brother when they were in need.

She tapped on the window and waited for it to slide open. She helped Pacey climb through the window then saw Drake's hand snake out through the drakness and grab hers. She tried to see his eyes in the darkness but couldn't, so she let him pull her up.

When she cleared the windowsill, Drake let go of her hand and went to the bed where Pacey had already climbed in.

Drake pulled back the covers for her to crawl in next to Pacey. When she had the covers pulled up to her stomach, Drake slid in beside her.

For the first time, she was aware of Drake next to her. She hadn't realized that they were both wearing shorts, so when his leg brushed against hers, she sucked in a breath. She closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep, so that the feeling would stop, but opened them again.

Drake's eyes were on her, and she wondered if he had always slept this close to her when she would crawl into his bed. Surely she had not found this comfortable before?

Then she realized that Drake's gaze no longer lingered on hers. His eyes had moved down to focus on her mouth. She tired to breath regularly but it didn't seem possible. She looked down at his mouth too and felt a magnetic pull.

At some point, Drake's hand had snaked around her waist and was pulling her closer. By the look on Drake's face, he didn't realize exactly what he was doing.

Before she could change her mind, Violet pulled back. She scooted until her back was up against Pacey's, then turned over to face him.

She couldn't look at Drake anymore. She knew that they were both reacting this way only because it was nighttime. This is the sort of thing that happened at nighttime.

But it had never happened before.

She put her arm around Pacey's little body and tried to fall asleep. But all she could hear was Drake's breathing. She could tell that he hadn't fallen asleep yet.

         "Drake," she whispered.

         "Hmm?"

         "Why do you hate Christian?"

         There was silence.

"I don't hate Christian. I'm just worried about you. I don't want you to get hurt."

         "I won't," she said confidently.

Soon, his breathing had steadied and she knew he had fallen asleep.

Maggie couldn't sleep. Thomas hadn't come back after storming out of the bedroom, and she knew he was asleep on the couch.

Finally, with a sigh, she sat up and threw the covers off of her. As quietly as she could, she opened the door and walked through the dark house to the living room.

Sure enough, on the couch lay a dark lump, moving up and down in a rythmic breathing pattern. She couldn't see, from where she stood, if he was asleep or not.

She knealt down next to the sofa and put a hand on Thomas' shoulder. He was facing the back of the couch but when he felt her hand on him, he turned over to face her.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I should never have accused you of cheating."

His eyes were emotionless, probably from having just woken up from his sleep. He shook his head and put a hand on her cheek. "I would never, ever cheat on you Maggie. I admit, I'm having trouble, not being faitful, with other things, but I would never do that to you. Not that."

She nodded and put her hand over his.

He took his hand back and said, "Did you hear them leave?"

She squinted at him, confused. "Who?"

         "Violet and Pacey."

She shook her head. Her eyes were beginning to adjust to the darkness and she could see the contours of his face. He looked sad. "I heard her window open as I walked by."

She closed her eyes and wished that she knew what to do. Was Christian being a good enough destraction for her daughter? Was Violet enough of a shield for Pacey?

         She hoped so.

"They'll be okay," she whispered to her husband. "I know they will."

         He nodded.

         "Come to bed," she said.

He shook his head and lifted the covers. "You come in here."

She gave him a small smile and climbed onto the large couch next to him. The only way that she could keep from falling off was to lie halfway on top of her husband, but he didn't seem to mind.

He wrapped his arms around her, borrowing his face in her long hair, and if she didn't know better, she would think that they were happy.
