| Chapter Twenty-Three | Entry #535235 |
Violet's eyes scanned the cafeteria for Christian's blonde head, but she didn't see it. She took her place in front of Drake. "You didn't see him come in?" she asked him.
Drake shook his head, but Violet didn't figure that he was too concerned, since he was too busy stuffing his face.
She rolled her eyes and stood again so that she could see above the people around her.
"Violet," Drake said from where he sat. "Don't worry so much. It'll be fine. You'll get a chance to talk to him."
"I know," she said as she sat down once more. "But I'm impatient. I want to talk to him now, not later."
Then she thought of when she'd first started to hang out with him. "Do you think he went to the library to study?" she asked anxiously.
"I don't know, babe." Drake gulped his milk.
Violet stood yet again. "I'm gonna go check, okay? I'll be back."
Drake looked disappointed for a second, but then he sighed and gave her a weak smile.
She grinned back and gave him a kiss on the cheek, just for good measure. She wandered down the hall to the library, where it sat in the very front of the school. Peeking through the front windows, she didn't see him, but that didn't mean that he wasn't there.
She entered through the side door and found him sitting at a table between two shelves. She pulled up a seat beside him and waited until he looked up.
He had many different expressions on his face- confusion, surprise, sorrow. "Violet." He breathed it out as if savoring the sound of it.
"Christian, whatever you think, I'm not mad at you."
He looked away from her as if ashamed. "You should be."
"But I'm not."
He looked up at her, and she could just make out relief in his eyes. "So, how are thing between you and Drake?"
Violet couldn't help herself. She felt her face disolve in a grin. "It's great."
"What happened to that Andria chick?"
Violet's brow furrowed. "Good question. I'm going to choose to believe that Drake dumped her."
Christian laughed. "I don't think he was ever actually with her. I think he was just doing it to make you jealous." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Did it work?"
Violet rolled her eyes. "Pretty well, actually."
Christian leaned back in his chair, obviously relaxed now. "So, are you two going to prom?"
"Together? No."
Christian looked confused. "Why?"
"Well, I thought I already had a date."
Christian's eyebrows rose. "You still want to go with me?"
She nodded.
"What about Drake?"
Violet smiled widely. "He'll manage."
They sat in silence for a moment, and Violet got up to leave.
"Violet," Christian said. "Can I ask you a question?"
She turned around to face him. "Sure."
He seemed hesitant for a second, but then continued. "Why aren't you mad about all this?"
She looked down at the ground then back up at him. "I was mad for about a millisecond. But I think the thing that made it okay was the fact that you never made me think that we were anything more than friends."
"And I wasn't pretending about being your friend."
"Exactly."
Then she turned and walked away.
Maggie didn't want to go to work the next morning. She stood at the front door, pressed against the frame by Thomas.
He kissed her neck and she had to force her eyes to stay open, to remember that they would both have to eventually leave for work. They'd made it out of the bedroom, down the hallway, and all the way through breakfast without loosing their focus, but they hadn't quite made it out the door.
"Thomas, you're gonna be late," she sighed.
He let out a loud breath and kissed her once on the mouth. "I love you," he told her before climbing into his car.
She was still walking on the clouds when she got to the Tea Cup.
As she skipped to the other side of the counter, Nancy looked at her like as if she'd grown a hairy mole on the end of her nose. "What are you so happy about?" she asked.
Maggie grinned and plopped down the stool next to Nancy's. "I have a feeling it's gonna be a while before Thomas and I have another fight."
Nancy's eyebrows rose. "You mean, you two..."
"At least six times in the past twelve hours," she said proudly, not in the least bit embarrassed by her and her husband's enthusiasm.
"I'm happy for you," Nancy said, and Maggie believed that she meant it.
After a few mintues of shuffling papers and checking one customer out, Nancy asked, "So, what was it? That was making him so hesitant, I mean."
"You wouldn't believe it if I told you," Maggie muttered.
Nancy looked interested and she leaned closer to Maggie. "What was it?"
Maggie felt a little guilty about exploiting her husband's emotional insecurities, but it was just Nancy, and she felt that her husband wouldn't be bothered by it if he ever found out.
"Well," she explained. "You know how he got demoted about three months ago?"
Nancy nodded.
"It turns out that he felt as if he didn't deserve me since he couldn't afford to give me all the nice things that he used to."
From the look on Nancy's face, Maggie feared that any second now, she would let out a loud 'awww.'
Fortunately, she didn't.
Instead, she asked, "That's it?"
Maggie sighed. "Think about it from a guy's point of view. You know how they are."
Nancy nodded. "Yeah, I guess I do."
Maggie let out a breath that she felt like she'd been holding since this whole thing started, and for the first time in a long time, she felt satisfied. Violet was happy, she was happy, and she was sure that Pacey was happy. The boy was always happy, as long as there was some Spongebob around. And his sister, of course.
"I'm sorry." When Nancy said this, it pulled Maggie out of her thoughts.
"For what?" she asked, turning to her friend.
"For asking you if you regretted marrying Thomas. I know you don't. I'm not sure why I even asked."
Maggie shrugged. "Don't worry about it."
Once again, it remained silent.
Then Nancy spoke. "How did things go with Violet and that boy?"
Maggie laughed to herself. "Let's just say that it didn't go the way I planned."
"Why?"
"Well, the boy I paid started feeling guilty, Violet found out about it, and then realized that she's in love with the boy she's been friends with her whole life."
"Drake Andrews?" Nancy looked truly confused now.
"Yup."
"But I thought you said..."
"That they would never be anything more than friends?"
Nancy nodded.
"Yeah. I know."
As they were shelving old ceramics on a counter in the back, Maggie heard Nancy mutter, "You know, I never went to my prom. I didn't have a date."
Maggie let out a little laugh. "Well, Violet has plenty." She paused and smiled to herself, thinking about her husband again. "Thomas and I went to prom together. That was the night he told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me."
Maggie continued to stack as Nancy looked on fondly. |
