the soul of geniusEntry #552225

There is something so heartwarming about listening to young people making music.

Tonight was my son's high school band concert. I love going. The music itself can be varying degrees of enjoyable, as they are in the learning stage, but the idea of that whole group of kids taking time out from their social lives and homework and all to take the time to learn to play an instrument can stir emotions in me that not much else can. The school is rather small. The band is not. In fact, they have a concert band, a woodwind band, a pep band, and a marching band. At least most of them are in more than one branch of the band department.

Before one of the songs the middle school played (they went on first), the director announced that the students did not like the song because it's a difficult piece. It was also a cultural piece from another country and he felt it was important to expose them to both. I agree. I like this man so far. He seems to realize music is more than entertainment ... it's a huge door that can open a young person's mind to so many possibilities.

The piece was obviously difficult. They struggled with it, but they hung in there and it was still beautiful.

As it ended, a woman behind me said, "I can see why they don't like it." And I thought ... you don't get it. *sigh*

I guess lots of people don't get it. Such a shame. Introducing various cultures in a very small town environment can be a struggle. Most won't get it. Hopefully, these young people will.

"Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius."
