Allowance
Can I get a general consensus here on allowance? Do you give your kid(s) an allowance and if so, at what age, for what, and how much?
Here's why I ask- our oldest son is almost 10. He wants to start receiving an allowance. Our feelings are kind of like, he shouldn't have to be paid to do his chores regularly when it's something that we kind of expect as a member of the family. On the other hand, why else would a kid regularly receive an allowance which he needs since he's too young to get a job and wants to have his own money. The other part of this is we have two other children who also have chores (granted- not as many or as difficult). Do we give a 6 and 4 year old an allowance as well, two individuals who regularly lose, misplace, or give away any money that they do get. And if so, should it be as much as what Koty would receive. What's your thoughts? What's your practice in your home?

Thats a good question.....Well Dragon and I have found some answers to that age old question. With Brandon he can earn up to $10 a week, that he then can spend on anything. Catch is he earns its!
At the being of the week he starts out with ten, durning the week his actions cause him to keep money or lose money. Some things that cost are easy stuff just things he seems to have a hard time remembering, for explain if he leaves the bathroom light on it can cost him a quater. Another explain he is to make his bed every day, not making it cause him to lose a $1. The big thing that cost him money is his mouth. Right now we are fighting off smart ass comments left and right....depending on the comment depands on his cost. He can also lose money to things like mistreating one of our dogs or cats.
Now I said he could also earn money back. Catching one of us leaving hte light on or our bed not being made can earn him money. He also earns money back by actions that are kind and postive. When he helps weed the garden or mow the yard he gets money back to his funds. He also earns money back by being kind to others, like my favorite story is the one from walmart. We were standing in the cleaner/smelly candle aile at our local walmart. There was also someone who worked at walmart in the aile with us. She was putting away product when the bottom of the box broke open and started to drop things to the ground. Before any of us could move Brandon was on the ground picking the items up for the older lady who was stocking them. First I was shocked, but it was even better to see that the woman was just floored that Brandon was so fast to act and help out. This earned him money back but also help with his sense of pride and honor in himself which is something our belief path teaches us in important.
We also do it this way because then Brandon understand his action effect his life. Which is a lesson I think a lot of people forget to teach, now days. I hope it helps a bit......and I hope camping is a blast.

There was an article in Psychology Today, or something like that, which stated that childeren who earned their allowence learned the value of money. Almost all of the people in the study who did recieve an allowence seemed to have a better understanding of how to balance there money better than those who didn't .You seem like really fair parents, as long as you set down a base pay and base the allowence amout upon the job and age of the child it should all work out.
I think I recieved an allowence until I was fifteen. Once I started doing my dad's laundry I was allowed to keep what ever was in his pockets. I earned like $35.00 out of one load. An allowence is never a bad. As long as you make sure that the kid understands that it's the job well done that earns the money, not expectation it should be o.k.

So misunderstood no one understands but ONE
YEs I do agree with the allowance thing too. i do not have kids but I was one at some time LOL... but seriously I agree with the idea that you start with somthing at the beginning of the week and pending on how you are and what you do through the week is what you or how you keep the money. I had an alowance when I was younger. I think my mom started us at 8 or 9 years old. she had an age we started at so my younger brother could not say well she gets paid for it ... and I don't we just did not make a big deal about the payment till you where 8-9 anyway. I started working when I was 14 years old summers but till then I got and allowance. If you do do an allowance you are not paying the children to do the work around the house because they need to do it anyway you are paying then for how well they do the work. hope this helps
