I've been very lucky the last few weeks - almost all of my appointments have held. Last night I went to a local chamber meeting for the first time with a colleague. I was seriously under-dressed and therefore mortified. But I still had a good time and met six new people.

I didn't know how hard it would be to talk to complete strangers, even in that setting. My colleague and I were lucky because we got there early and sat almost in the center of the room, right near the entrance. Four or five people joined us and we had a great time chatting and getting to know each other. Three other people there were from Florida so we had a nice discussion about it. Toward the end one of the guys there, Brian, and I started talking about the economy which made me glad that I've kept on top of all that. One of the women there was kind enough to give some information about an upcoming mixer as well. I'm hoping to be able to attend it since it's only once a month.

It was a great way to learn socialization skills by doing. I think I talked a bit too much but I think I helped keep everyone entertained. I even pulled of a few jokes that made everyone laugh.

I've been really surprised since I moved here four years ago at how difficult it is to meet people here. In Florida people talk to each other - in gas stations, in the park, at the store, walking down the street. Up here, I'm lucky if someone will talk to me in the gym or the hair salon - a gas station or grocery store is pushing it. So I'm hoping this will help. In my business, it's all about who you know. I plan to know as many people as possible.
