On the heels of the Harry Potter book-to-movie phenomenon, it's not surprising that a number of Young Adult novels have recently made the jump to the big screen. I had not heard of the City of Ember series, and hadn't heard of the movie adaptation of the first of the four books in the series. But George came across it on In Demand cable and looked it up on http://imdb.com. Phrases such as comparisons to Terry Gilliam's Brazil stood out for him, so we decided to give it a try.

I am infinitely glad that we did.

From the first five minutes, I was totally captivated by the premise of this movie, which has never happened before, so completely, and so immediately. They don't come out and say so, but you can presume that some form of world-wide apocalypse has occurred which has caused all of mankind to seek shelter in an underground city called Ember. The Builders designed the city so that its occupants would have no knowledge of the world above, so they would not know what they had lost. But they didn't intend for their descendants to live in Ember forever. They designed a box that would open in 200 years, and provide the knowledge its holders would need. But the box was lost.

This is one of the most original, inventive movies that we have seen in a very long time. As I've already said, the premise captivated me from the start, and held my attention throughout. I can only dream of creating something so unique, so magical, myself someday. If you write science fiction, or just enjoy watching or reading it, we both highly recommend that you check this one out! George: "I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm not even a science fiction fan!"
