This is a good example of the "coming of age" memoir genre. Based on the book by Willie Morris, My Dog Skip covers a couple of the formative years in Willie's life when he was a painfully shy, friendless nine year old in 1940s Mississippi. His mother (against his father's wishes) gets him a puppy for his birthday. Through Skip, a Jack Russell terrier, Willie came out of his shell, made friends, and finally began to explore the area around his small delta town, like any boy his age should be doing. Along the way, perhaps predictably, Willie learns some valuable life lessons. This is a very sweet, cute, touching movie, and if you have or ever did have pets, you may want to have a box of tissues handy.
