Title: Make Things Fair - Ta x Us Twice!

President Obama announced his plans today for his new tax reform. In addition to going after tax cheats, he made certain to let us know that companies operating in countries such as China and paying legitimate taxes there are cheating us all by not paying taxes here. I found it highly enjoyable he felt that he had to repeat the word "fair" - "we're helping ensure all Americans contribute their fair share," he made sure to tell us. Let's discuss fair in terms that most Americans can understand.

Many Americans live in subdivisions and pay property taxes based on the value of our home. Let's suppose your local Homeowners group decided that the money funding it just wasn't being taken fairly. Many people in our neighborhood own a vacation home and are legitimately and legally paying homeowners dues to that neighborhood association. It's obvious that those with two homes have a greater income than the poor saps struggling to make their first house payment. And, hey, we need more revenue. Therefore, the HOA decides to charge a fee for both homes. And, since we're comparing apples to taxes, let's make sure we note that this is a special HOA that charges fees on a sliding scale, based on the value of the houses.

You're already paying HOA fees on your second home to the association on the lake. Which house are you going to sell? Why, the one that requires you to double pay, of course. And this, to me, is the major thing that seems to be missed by most folks. Yes, if the corporations do what Obama wants and stops operating internationally, then they will have to take it in the wallet as their costs increase. But what sane company is going to do that?

The reason that the profits are an issue on tax returns is because these companies have been re-investing foreign profits back into their American base. Any intelligent business executive is going to see that the easiest way to avoid this double taxation is simply to stop bringing a profit back to the US. If the American company stagnates or struggles, it is easier to dump it. It will grow only when it becomes profitable in America. The company may make millions in Japan - and we won't see that here, not in the forms of a cash stimulus to the economy, not in the forms of expansion or jobs. Ultimately, we may lose companies like Microsoft, which can easily operate from across the ocean - any ocean - cutting American jobs to 0% and ending the purchasing of products from us, and ultimately hurting the environment.

And of course, if we want to buy Windows, the price will increase.
