Title: Chapter 2

Hoyle and Megan climbed a ladder. Megan was confused. Her grandparent’s house was only one floor. How could they be going up? She was afraid to ask. After a short climb, they came to a door that Hoyle pushed open. “Come on, we’re here.”

“Where is here?” Megan asked. When she entered the room she discovered that Hoyle was very short; only three feet tall. He was wearing a green suit that matched his eyes. Looking around, she gasped in shock.

It was a large room with windows for three walls. The door they came through was in a white wall. The room had green carpet and no furniture. Hoyle motioned for her to join him at the far end of the room. “Take a look.”

Megan walked next to him. She should be in her grandparents’ attic, but she wasn’t looking at the back yard. It was a carnival with rides, games, fun houses, and food booths. People passed through holding bags of popcorn and cotton candy. The trees surrounding the carnival shimmered with colorful leaves, as if it were fall instead of spring. A clown passed by carrying balloons. Megan pressed her hands against the glass.

“It’s amazing!”

Hoyle stood beside her. “It is amazing. Every day I see this carnival. It’s always fall, always sunny, and people are always having fun.”

“This is great!” Megan said. “How is this possible? You get to live at a carnival every day. I’ve only been to one carnival. I had the most fun! I wrote a story for my English class about it.”

Hoyle frowned. “That’s the problem. I’m stuck in this room.” He pointed to the door. “That door is the only way out, and it leads to your grandparents’ house. It used to lead to the carnival but it hasn’t for a long time, since before you were born. Your grandparents are fine people, but I belong at the carnival. Your granddaddy used to let me go everyday, but one day he forgot to let me out and he never came back. I need your help so I can go back where I belong.”

Megan shook her head. “Granddaddy is nice. Why would he lock you up here?”

“I think he forgot about me,” Hoyle said. He took Megan’s hand. “Can you get him to let me out?”

Megan nodded. “Sure, I’ll talk to him right now.”

“No!” Hoyle shouted. “Don’t do that! He won’t believe you.”

Megan smiled. “That’s true, he won’t. People always accuse me of making up stories. How can I convince him you’re trapped up here?”

“There’s a red book in your grandmother’s cedar chest that I need you to get out for me.”

“I know where it is! They keep the cedar chest in the big coat closet next to the front door. I’ll get it out and bring it to you.”

Hoyle shook his head. “Don’t bring it to me. Give it to your granddaddy. Make sure he looks at it. There’s a story in there he needs to read again. He read it once and almost let me out, but he put the book away and forgot about me again. If he reads it with you, he’ll let me out of here!”

Megan nodded. “I’ll get that book out tonight, after they go to bed.”

“Thanks!” Hoyle said, opening the door. “Now go. You don’t want them to worry. And remember, you never saw me.”

“Right,” Megan said, going out the door and climbing down the ladder. “I’ll come back if I need you again.”

Hoyle shook his head. “The magic won’t work unless I’m with you. I’ll come to you. Don’t worry. You’ll do fine.”

Megan climbed down the ladder and squeezed through the cabinet over the stove. She was putting the step stool back in place when Granddaddy came in the kitchen.

“Are you ready to come outside?” he asked.

Megan smiled and put her glass in the dishwasher. “I just finished unpacking and got a glass of water. Let’s go! I’m ready to learn some gardening!”

“Good!” he said, leading her out the sliding glass door to the backyard. Glancing back, the kitchen looked normal. She shook her head. What a day, and it was only ten in the morning!
