Title: Chapter 8

“It’s good to see you again Clarence!” Hoyle said, shaking Granddaddy’s hand.

Granddaddy wrinkled his brow. “Hoyle? Is that you?”

Hoyle smiled and slapped Megan on the back. “See, I told you he’d remember me! All we had to do was refresh his memory.”

“Do you know this creature?” Nana asked, huddled in the corner near the back door.

Granddaddy nodded. “I forgot all about him. Lorrine, do you remember that book I was writing? The one about the man that lived at the carnival?”

Nana thought a moment and nodded. “That’s right; you were writing a book right before Micah was born.”

Granddaddy pointed at Hoyle. “He was my muse for the story.”

Megan sniffed. “What’s a muse?”

“It’s a creature that gives writers their ideas,” Granddaddy said. “I had a strange dream after I went to a carnival one night and I decided to turn it into a story.”

“A story you never finished!” Hoyle said. “You’ve left me trapped for fifteen years. I’d still be there if it weren’t for Megan!”

Nana and Granddaddy looked at Megan. She sobbed. “I’m sorry. He came to me right after I got here. I didn’t know what to do. I knew you wouldn’t believe me if I told you what happened. Besides, part of being grown up means not having to ask for help.”

“Megan that’s nonsense!” Nana said. “Everybody needs help from time to time, even grown ups.”

Hoyle nodded. “That’s right. Granddaddy and I both need help to get this story finished so I can go back to my carnival.”

“Your carnival?” Granddaddy asked. “I remember why I never finished that book. I ran out of ideas! All I could think of was you riding rides, playing games and running through funhouses. You weren’t having adventures anymore. You were playing every day.” He pointed at Hoyle. “It’s your fault I didn’t finish the book. If you didn’t get so busy having fun you would have remembered to finish the story.”

“My fault!” Hoyle shouted. “You’re the one with the computer and the brain! I give you the ideas and you’re supposed to write them. You were the one that got busy telling Micah and Megan stories about your life. Then you started reading Megan’s stories and forgot about your own!”

“Wait!” Nana said. “It doesn’t matter whose fault it is. It sounds like you both got off task.” She motioned to the computer in the living room. “I bet the story is on the computer. That machine is old but it still works. Why don’t you work together to finish it?”

“How?” Granddaddy asked. “I still don’t have any ideas.”

Hoyle picked up the red scrapbook. “Yes you do. The answer is right here,” he said, opening it to the first page titled “Funhouse Adventure.”

Megan gasped. “That was the most popular story in my book! It’s about how I got lost in a funhouse and made up an adventure about finding another world in it.”

“I remember this story,” Granddaddy said. “It reminded me of Hoyle’s story, but I didn’t want to steal it from you. I think that’s why I put this book in the chest.”

Nana nodded. “So you wouldn’t feel bad about not finishing your own story.”

Megan picked up the book. “Granddaddy, why don’t we work together to finish your book? Let me read what you wrote and we can use my story to finish it.”

Hoyle smiled. “Now you’re talking.”

“Will you be free if we do this?” Granddaddy asked.

“I’ll be free to enjoy the carnival and I won’t bother you again.” Hoyle grabbed a piece of pound cake from the table and shoved it in his mouth. “Before I go, I’d like to enjoy this cake. It’s marvelous!”

“Don’t talk with your mouth full,” Nana said.

"Sorry,” Hoyle mumbled.

“Let’s get to work!” Megan said.

Nana turned on the oven. “I guess I’ll get to work baking another pound cake.”

They laughed and booted up the computer.
