Part 1: How it all Began
It was a gloomy, raining summer in the middle of Brooklyn in 1997. A few kids still willing to play outside in the rain and not caring while others stared in boredom through their dirty windows. It was in the ghettos where these kids lived and like had the everyday difficulties out on the streets. Gangs doing their business selling pot, crack, weed, and other stole goods for their families or for personal gain. The kids didn't have must to look forward to, especially a young 4 year old girl, Nikki, with her innocent sky blue eyes, long black hair, and very fit for a toddler. She never really liked it here, but it was a place to call home. Her parents were recently layoff another job due to poor business and bankrupt. Michelle and Michael would constantly talk about what to do with Nikki and raising her.
"We could give her to me sister in California until we have enough money to support her," Michael suggested.
"No, that's too far away from here," whispered Michelle, the worrying mother.
She always had a strong connection with Nikki, like all mothers and daughters do and she didn't want to lose that. However, she was starting to run out of opinions and it's not like she's going to trusted many people with only child. Then, an idea came to her head.
"What about my good friend, Samantha? She loves Nikki and wouldn't mind caring her for a little while."
Michelle and Samantha go way back into their young girl years. Their parents worked together in the community and lived right next door to each other. Samantha was always the level headed one and the children's caretaker as a young one while Michelle was the wild one and usually ignored responsibilities. It was until she became pregnant with Nikki was when their friendship was really tested. They pulled through and Samantha always volunteered to watch her when they were tried from working overtime at their jobs.
"Are you sure she wouldn't minded?" questioned the father.
"Positive, she loves her and would do it for free."
"In the situation we're in, she might have to." Walking away from the dripping window and into the dim, dark living room was little Nikki about to join in the conversion.
"Mom, Dad?" questioned the little girl, "What are you guys talking about?" The uncertain parents were about to talk to their curious daughter when they heard a knock at the door.
Michael went to go answer it, not knowing it was going to be his last time. When he opened the squeaking door, he saw a couple of guys, not older than 20, wearing all black from head to toe with ski masks on. They were soaking wet but that wasn't what worried him. What worried him was that they were each holding a hand gun that was pointing directly at his guts. Trying not to give them the wrong message in surrendering, he gulped and asked them polity, "May I help you, sirs." Those were his lasted words before they heard a gunshot from the door and saw a once health man, going down dying in front of their eyes. Michelle screamed in terror seeing her husband dead at her footsteps.
"What do you creeps want with us? We have no money or valuables," she shouted still angry and in terror of the recent death of her late husband. The two robbers just looked at each other and then aimed straight for her chest. Bang, bang were the sound of the mini torpedo at hit their target with perfect accuracy. The bewilderment child was in complete shock in what just happened in front of her young eyes. Two deaths in a row and for no reason at all, the two robbers knocked out the poor little girl unconscious and stole all of their goods, or what goods they had. It turns out they stole their TV, some china they never used or show and their living room furniture. When Nikki woke up, she was in an empty room and the dead, bloody bodies of her both of her parents.
"Mom... Dad?" Her voice drafted in the hollow room with dead silent. The young girl was too scary to move or do anything but curl up in a ball and cry her heart out.
"Anyone?" she wailed, hoping anyone could hear her cries.
Part 2: Destiny
After the death of her parents, confused and distresses Nikki ran away and started a new life off on the streets. Stealing some of the neighbors clothing to keep her warm and learned to hustle people for food and money was how she started out, but it wasn't her style. Day in and out living on the streets, being tempted to even join a gang just to have a 'family' wasn’t making her life any easier. A couple of years have passed and she was running out of opinions on what to do with her life.
"Man, what am I going to do now?" she thought. "It's not like I can get a job at this age, but I really need a place to stay at and to call home. Living out here gets old and I'm running out of money."
She kept thinking about this while walking across the park on a breezing spring day. The sun was shining down on her, much to her dismays because she wanted sunglasses, and the wind ran through her long, flowing black hair. Her was starting to developed some sweat because all she had were some long black sweat pants, with a white tank top and black jacket. She would've taken it off but it was a jacket that her mother gave her just before she was lay-off and shot dead. It was sort of apart of her now.
Still walking around, watching some of the kids with their parents or single parents having a great time while she was all alone with nothing but some stolen goods. She was almost half way there, away from the park when she heard some loud music down by the courtyard.
"Music?" she thought. "For what?" She decided to go investigate where the sound was coming from and for what reason. Just down below her, she spotted a fenced in courtyard with a bunch of teenagers crowded around in a circle, bumpin', jumpin', and dancin' to the rhythm of the beat. She wanted to get a closer look at the dancing but couldn't figure out a way to get in. Then, she spotted an opening by the gate that no one was paying attention to. She made it to the gate and couldn't believe what she saw with her sky blue eyes. It was like the battle of the sexes, boys verses girls and it was like a showdown to the finish.
The girls were on the left and the guys were on the right, all in all trying to showoff their best moves. Suddenly, a couple broken free from the crowd and it seem like they were the team captains, finishing it off for the last minute. The guy, slender but you can definitely tell he's been workout out for this, had short brown hair that were hidden underneath his hat and evergreen eyes. He showed off his moves by hitting the ground, straight on his back and managed to come up by kicking his legs towards the girl and landed it. Then, he started to do to moonwalk only to landed in a push-up position and started to spin on has head. The crowd was amazed at this guys stunts has they cheered him on, however the girl still had something up her sleeves.
The girl had long, blonde hair put in a ponytail, had deep, dark brown eyes and yet her physical features were similar to the guy. She came down to the ground with both hands but ended up with one holding her up. After spinning around in a perfect balance, she lifted up back on her feet only to ended up back on the ground. Only this time, she went back and started to do backwards flips that ended in splits, coming up on her knees. The mini battle over Amanda and Cody, the team captains of the Cougars and Sum5 , was officially over. The DJ over the arena soon announced the winners of the dance competition.
"And the win of the 'Beat to the Beat' dance contest goes to.." the crowd wondered in awe already jammin' to the on going beat, "Sum5!" he finally announced. All of the girls in the Sum5 were jumping up and down as they have claimed victory over the boys.
The two groups got together as they congratulated each other by bumping fists against each other when one of the girls spotted Nikki by the gates. She herself wasn't as fit as rest of the gang but still in very good shape. Her sweating red hair stuck on the back of her neck as she approached the girl in a casual manner.
"S'sup there girl?" she asked in a heavy Brooklyn accent. "What are you doing here by yourself?" Nikki's eyes started to swell up in tears were she heard the words 'by yourself'. However, she didn't want to give the girl the wrong message and quickly straighten up.
"I heard some music and was wondering what was going on. Then I saw them two people dancin' and wish that I could do the same thing." Alyssa, the red head, looked at the girl and saw in her eyes some true talent on the inside of her, waiting to come out.
So, did ya' like what you saw?" she asked, panting a little. The little girl nodded her head and wanted to say how much her loved it, but couldn't put it in words.
"Look girl, it's o.k. if you like it and even get into it yourself. Just come by anytime you want and I can probably hook ya' up on a few dances moves if ya want?"
Nikki didn't want to pass up an offer like this and since she didn't have anywhere else to go, she agreed.
"Cool, catch ya' later then. I better get back to my crew." As she started to walk away, she almost completely forgot about her manners about introducing herself.
"By the way, my name is Alyssa. What's your?" her sort of hollered back. She replied back, "Nikki," and simply walked away, ready to start a new life ahead of her in street dancing.
Part 3: Meeting new friends
Only a couple of weeks have gone by and Nikki has returned to the park to learn some moves. She didn't really know what to expect from this but hoping something good would happen. She spotted Alyssa and her team captain, Nicole, down by the arena court were she saw them dancing not too long ago. She was amazed to see how fit Nicole was for a girl her age. She ran particularly everywhere and practiced on her dance moves just as much. Nicole saw how Nikki was sort of staring her down and introduced herself.
"Hey there girl. My name is Nicole and my friend here was just telling me how much you enjoyed the little dance contest we had a couple of weeks ago. So, what did you think?" she asked with a voice a little deep for a girl. Nikki looked up at the girl and stated,"I'm Nikki, and I did like your dance contest very much. I wish I could do was you guys did." She made her head fall a little because she thought, "Who am I kidding myself with being with these teens? I'm just a kid."
The girls realized that she had a sad look on her face and wanted to help cheer her up.
"Say Nike," Alyssa whispered to her captain by using her nickname. "What about them two other girls we spotted after Miss Curiosity left? You think they might want to help this girl out with some confident-boosted?"
"Aly, I think you might be on to something. Where are that at?" she asked
"Over there by the basketball court, shootin' some hoops," she pointed out. By the basketball courts were two girls who looked completely opposite from each other, which they were.
The girl on the right was Asian and had very short, black hair and was wearing all black even thought it was a hot day with the sun beating down on the park. The other girl was black with long brown hair and wearing the American colors on her body, red, white, and blue. Nicole called out to the girls so they could probably meet their new friend. The two girls raced each other towards the two dancers and a new girl who a depressing attitude. They made a complete stop just in front of the blue eyes, sorrowful girl and just looked at her in some confusion. Nikki piped her head up and saw the two girls looking at her and formed a question mark on her face.
"Hey, who's this girl?" asked Brook.
"Yeah," replied Sabira, "Who is she?" Nikki wanted to speak for herself, but Alyssa and Nicole did the talking for her.
"You see, this girl here wants to be a dancer and a street one at that. But everyone knows it's not officially unless you have a crew."Nicole explained.
"So, why not be apart of Nikki's crew?" finished off Alyssa. The two girls beamed up with delight were they heard the news about being in a crew. But then they started to wondered, "Why Nikki's crew?"
"Girls, meet your new dance captain, Nikki..." Alyssa started out but couldn't finish. Nikki never told her, her last name.
"Cole. Nikki Cole." The two girls were surprised to hear the silent one talk finally.
"O.k., enough chatting around. It's time to show us what you got," commanded Nicole.
Nikki protested, "But you never gave me a lesson, yet! How am I suppose to do something if I haven't learned it?" Nicole bend down to her level and started to explained how she didn't really know how to dance because it came from the heart. With the endless possibilities of dance moves she could come up with on her own, the only practice she needed was to improve on what she has already done or is going to learn. With that in minded, she approached the center court and started to move her body.
She sort of copied the moves from the dance contest but also added her own, made-up moves. Her hit the floor like a push-up position and then pushed herself off the ground and on her feet. Then she started some step moves which she remember from a little while ago. She started to step and pushed her feet off the ground like there was no tomorrow. Brooke and Sabira wanted to get in on the actions and started stepping to their own beat of the music. Eventually, the three girls gather in a circle, put their hands in, and jumped their way to a new friendship. For once in a long while, Nikki was happy again and actually enjoying herself and her new friends.
Part 4: The Years to Come
After meeting up with her new friends, Nikki eventually gained some confident that she never had before. Even thought she was only 6 at the time, meeting Brooke and Sabira was the best thing that ever happened to her. Once they declared their friendship with each other, Nicole wanted to make sure that she had a good family so she wouldn't be out on the streets anymore. Coincidentally, Nicole was Samantha's adopted daughter and since she was good friends with Nikki's mom, it was a very high possibility that she would take her in as well.
Nicole brought the girls to a mini apartment complex on the outskirts of Brooklyn that was somewhat shabby but livable. When she rung the doorbell, she quickly opened the door as she spotted a familiar being standing out there.
"Why, isn't little Nikki here to come see her godmother!" she exclaimed in delight. She hasn't seen Nikki in years since the death of her parents. She would've gone searching for her, but in a city like this and at her age, it would've been very difficult. Samantha just couldn't hold back in embracing the little girl soon to become a dancer. After all of this years taking care of Nicole and other kids around the neighborhood, it was time for her to leave the nest and start a new life in professional dancing. Now it was Nikki and her new friends to take the baton in the leadership of her godmother. She welcomed all of the girls in to have a sit and she started to have a little chat with Nikki.
"You know Nikki, your mother and I were great friends, rest her soul," she stated gravely. "And I know for a fact that she wouldn't have minded me raising you. In fact, I believe she would've been..."
"Glad?" interrupted the meek girl.
"Well, yes. So, tell me. Why didn't you come here first and instead lived off the streets? That's definitely not a good place to keep little girls at like you and your friends." Actually, she never gave it much thought why she didn't go off to live with her in the first place. She was like family to her, so why didn't she come here?
"I guess I was a little traumatized about my parents, it sort of escaped me. I'm sorry," she mumbled with a tear developing in her right crystal blue eye. Samantha came a little closer to her 'daughter' and embraced her in a motherly hug.
"It's alright," she whispered, "Everything will be alright for now on."
"Yeah girl! Beside, you're not alone in this girl," Brooke confined.
"Yeah. You have us now," finished off Sabira. The three girls gathered around for a group hug and to their surprise, Nicole already had the adoption papers, ready to be signed and claimed for.
"Tomorrow we'll go first thing in the morning to have you three has my daughters," Samantha explained. "For now, you may sleep upstairs until you are fully prepared." The three girls rushed upstairs to go check it out while Nicole got one more good look at the place before she headed out. She was recently accepted into Everest Institute and didn't want to pass that up, even thought she wouldn't be with her crew anymore. So, she decided to pass it on to Alyssa, the next captain of Sum5.
When tomorrow came, it was official for all of the girls, now 'sisters', that their guardian was Samantha Mayfields, a great friend and former wife. She took the three girls under her wings and raised them as her own. However, as the years blew by faster than expected, she found it increasing difficult to keep up with the money and the girls other activities. By the age of thirteen, Samantha was in so much debt that she had to pull some strings in order for the girls to start working in order to help her out. She eventually found a job that the girls could do while still being in school.
While still going to school, they would be janitor as well and even have a day-off, with pay and even learn online if there was an emergency. Their social life at school was being stretched to the limits because no one wanted to be friends with the janitor. So in their spare time, they would work on their moves in dancing and even come up with their own beat of music. Because they didn't have a social life in school, their crew on the streets were their main friends. Derrick was their bestest guy friend who's beginning was pretty rough as well. His brother became apart of a gang and after selling some drugs and making some money, he was soon shot dead at 25 for unknown reasons. The girls worked their tails off working a job while in school and still trying to have friends on the street while not becoming of the street.
Brooke and Sabira never departed from each other and Nikki, even with the tough girl attitude she had, was still trying to find some purpose in her crumbing life. Could something or someone make it all better for her?
