Is DVR a bad thing?Entry #660372
Maybe not to you, but in my parents house it can be a very mood-altering device...

My mother has a lifelong addiction to watching the "Days of Our Lives" and another soap. Before the DVR she would have to be home before 1pm and she wouldn't leave the house again until after 3pm. Now that she has figured out how to record her favorite shows on the DVR unit live is a little more normal except for when she gets a hold of the remote control.

Experts and comedians all accuse men for short television attention spans as we flip through the channels. I'm the only member in my family who will use the <guide> button on the remote to see what shows are on instead of flipping through each channel one by one. My dad and brothers rather flip through the satellite channels to see which ones are covered under their current subscriptions. These options are a lot less since my dad feels like television is a waste of time and money now and he also trying to keep up with the ever increasing rate increases (He still thinks that Obama is the best thing for the ecomony since the discovery of honest people in the IRS... oops did I mix my metaphors there). Since my mom knows how to retrieve her recorded shows she is actually more annoying with the remote than either of the other males in my family. She'll start watching her show and when a commercial comes on she'll fast forward until after her show comes back on and then she'll have to rewind. It is nauseating.

The other day, my dad was watching the recorded soap with my mother when he made a comment about the outcome of a particular scene and then walked out of the room. When his prediction came true he walked back into the room and at the next commercial break my mother rewound the program back to the last commercial break and showed my dad what he missed. Oblivious to my dad and he wondered why the same thing happened again. This pissed him off because he didn't realize that my mom recorded the show previously. Now my dad hates the DVR because it is just another way that modern technology is returning him back to his caveman status.

DVR's aren't a bad thing... it is just that you need to be willing to change to keep up with your conviences.
