| Chapter Thirty Nine | Entry #661946 |
Silas waited silently and patiently, sipping on a cup of hot java in the comfort of his carriage as the winter’s snow begun to fall on a dark but beautiful moonlit evening. A very serene feeling engulfed him as he enjoyed the beauty being played out around him. The same however couldn’t be said for Mason, he’d been left out in the biting cold assigned with playing close attention to the Facility, waiting for Hesser and the rest of the daytime staff to leave to make way for the skeleton night team to take over.
Meanwhile the Franz n’ Baron creation had altered its molecular shape to slide unnoticed down the hillside and down to the facility. His intention to be as close as possible and fully ready to capitalise on any opportunity he may have to execute his revenge on Hesser. Stealthily Franz n’ Baron had edged its way to within striking distance from the main entrance, Hesser could have no escape now, the second he’d come into view Hesser would be theirs, and he would be shown no mercy.
Silas completely unaware of the Franz n’ Baron’s personal mission of revenge continued to relax waiting for his opportunity to gain entrance to the facility and a closer look at Hesser’s studies, confident in his belief that the answers he needed would soon be his. If he’d had any knowledge of the reckless mission of intent going on just meters away from him he’d not hesitate to strike out with all his fury taking advantage of the all measures at his disposal to nullify the risk to his ambitions, for sure Mason’s most recent creation would cease to exist. Still Silas did not know, Mason who although on watch, had not seen, and Hesser who was now clearly visible in the reception area, deeply engaged in conversation with a member of the facility’s security team was blissfully unaware.
The Franz n’ Baron locked its hungry eyes on Hesser, the taste of revenge sweet on its lips. The creature of Mason’s science slowly began to morph back into its preferred humanoid shape while hiding in the shadows of conveniently well placed trees overseeing the short path from the facilities exit to the overlooking coach road. The Franz n’ Baron took in a deep breath, temporarily slowing it’s racing heartbeat, like a cat prepared and ready to pounce. It was at this precise moment that the unmistakeable clattering of an oncoming coach ground to a halt directly outside the facilities main entrance. This was the moment Franz n’ Baron had waited for. As the coach stopped Hesser began to make his way out the exit, simultaneously the coach door flung open and a small boy aged no more than 6 years ran from the coach down the path towards the Hesser, ‘Onkel, Onkel’ shouted the young boy excitedly as Hesser reached out to sweep the boy into his arms. Mid approach the Franz n’ Baron retreated in its attack, letting out a ear piercing shriek of frustration, the creature may have looked nothing more than a monster but it did possess two good human souls and neither one of them were heartless enough to continue with its planned violent assault, no matter how evil they perceived the recipient of their vengeance to be. The young boy clearly terrified by the freak noise, cowered in the arms of a surprisingly calm Hesser. ‘It’s ok little one, See the full moon?’ Hesser casually pointed to the haunting white orb in the sky, ‘It must be a wolf in the forest, everything is fine, let us go home.’
Meanwhile the shriek was audible enough to disturb Silas from his quiet moment of reflection as he left his seat and exited his carriage, a movement pre-empting the fast, though clumsily approaching Mason as he ran to inform Silas of Hesser’s departure.
‘What the hell was that Mason?’ exclaimed Silas.
‘I’m not entirely sure Sir, I think it may have possibly been the Baron, he seems to be missing Sir.’ Answered a rather jittery Mason.
‘He better not be doing anything to risk our goals here Charles, remember he’s your pet here, not mine, should he do anything stupid, have no doubt and be sure that once I’ve dealt with him, I’ll deal with you too.’ Maxton Silas turned to return to the comfort of the coach ‘Mason you best get in, it’s time we made our move’. Mason wearing a face akin to a scolded child and obedient as ever promptly entered the coach slamming the door shut behind him.
Franz n’ Baron paced amongst the trees, remaining hidden in the shadows trying to come to terms with the cruel twist of fate it’d just found itself victim too, how could circumstances play out so brutally against them. All this time the combined consciousness of both the Baron and Franz had patiently waited seeking their revenge, playing out Hesser’s death time after time in a myriad of increasingly vile and torturous ways. However before Franz n’ Baron could take comfort in its own self absorbed pity a low voice rumbled through the trees accompanied by soft footsteps.
‘Mason it appears we’ve found your pet, I’d recognise that vile stench anywhere, make sure you keep it on its leash this time!’ Silas as cold faced as ever met the creature square in the eyes as he spoke, the clear look of disdain visible for all to see. Silas continued past the creature through the cover of the trees following the building around to the side to an half opened window.
‘Perfect, if there’s one thing you can guarantee when you have a place as large as this and relying on staff is that someone will inevitably leave a window open somewhere.’ With that Silas lifted his cane to the window to open it fully enough for them to gain entrance.
‘Mason send in the Huntz, I believe he must be ravenous by now, if there’s someone in there make sure he feels free to satisfy that hunger’. With that Mason’s almost telepathic connection with the Huntz was evident again as with one simple glance the Huntz leapt in through the window. After an initial few moments of silence a sudden series of muffled screams echoed their way through the research wing of the facility before being silenced out to whispers in the cold dead of night.
‘Sounds like your little dog has done well yet again Mason, I knew there was a reason for keeping you around on this trip’ Silas joked.
Mason wasn’t impressed by Silas’ remarks, he knew that without him Silas had no hope of achieving his goals, Silas needed him, and for a much greater purpose than as a simple ringmaster for the zoo’s favourite attraction.
‘Charlie boy, how about you find us a way in that’s a little more civilised.’
Mason immediately turned to the Franz n’ Baron creation ‘You know what to do; we’ll be at the main entrance’. With that the humanoid form morphed down to its more gel like state and slithered in through the open window.
Silas and Mason walked calmly over to the main entrance and waited for the Franz n’ Baron creature to unlock the facilities main door. As the creature came into view in the reception area Silas addressed Mason ‘Well seems like you’ve got some control over that thing after all.’
The door sprung open and cane in hand Silas confidently strode in through the main door like he owned the building, with Mason closely following, both seemingly oblivious to the bloodied carcasses of the former security guards littering the corridors around them.
It didn’t take long before Silas and Mason stumbled on Hesser’s laboratory, Silas examined the place approvingly. ‘I think this place will suit our needs perfectly when the time comes, don’t you think Charles?’
Mason looked on in amazement, what was laid out afore him was the finest array of scientific equipment he’d ever seen, and crucially a version of the Grand Machine that he knew would be essential, this wasn’t a great surprise as he knew Hesser would be using some variant of such a contraption but this seemed twice the size and engineered to perfection in contrast to the more cold, rugged, industrialised looking machine he’d used back in London.
Silas interjected ‘I’ll take it by your stunned silence that you agree. Take a look around, find whatever it is you need and make it quick, we may have taken out the guards but I expect there will be activity from the psychiatric wing at some point and I don’t want any more blood on our hands this night, understood?’
‘Yes Sir.’ Affirmed Mason as he began to scour the room for something of use. It didn’t take long before he chanced upon Hesser’s notes. Mason frantically skimmed through the pages of Hesser’s findings and then suddenly paused, finding himself lost for words.
After a few moments Silas sensed Mason’s lack of animation, glanced over and saw a very perplexed looking Mason ‘Do you have something there Charles?’
‘Erm, yes Sir, I believe I do.’
