I couldn't look as they wheeled the body away. I wasn't afraid. It was nothing like that. I just figured she wouldn't want me to see her in that state. You know, for the last time.

I knew who did it. Everyone did. It was only a matter of time before the police asked enough questions and were pointed in the right direction. Everyone knew he was bad for her.

Until they were done, I wasn't allowed in the house, for obvious reasons. It was still a crime scene. I couldn't keep myself from walking around it though. Circling it just outside the police line, it seemed so strange. It felt like a dream, the kind you immediately woke up from and sighed because you realized it wasn't real.

Nobody ever expected to be awakened by the news that their only sister was dead.

I could see into the backyard. Up against the house was the garden she promised him she wouldn't plant. He didn't want flowers in their backyard. He wanted a pool. He got roses instead. The evidence of that fight was on her for weeks.

"Ma'am, I need you to step back."

I looked up into kind eyes, but all I could see was a suited man, who in about ten minutes would know more than I did about my sister's murder. Where did it happen? What had their last fight been about?

I nodded and stepped back until he turned away from me. I wondered what it was like to be him, no connection to the victim. As if hearing my thoughts, he turned to look back at me before disappearing into her house.

I waited. What else could I do?
