Title: Chapter 5: Ian Blackwell is no monster

Ian Blackwell turned off the security camera after witnessing the scene of Patient 1138’s awakening. Regaining consciousness was the purpose of assigning Dr. Therice to the case, but he hadn’t expected it to come so quickly.

Ian took a glass from the cabinet and filled it with a dark, sweet liquid. It didn’t’ matter what liquor it was; Ian needed something to calm his nerves. He took a breath and swallowed a large mouthful. It was going to be difficult to explain this to the partners. How could he get them to understand why he appeared to have a strong interest in one patient. He wasn’t even certain he could explain, even to himself.

He certainly couldn’t tell them about the feelings he felt when she looked into his eyes upon her arrival, how she seemed to implore him for answers to questions she didn’t know how to ask. She exuded a kind and carefree attitude that didn’t exist anymore. He was one of the rare, old ones who had a glimmer of memory of what that felt like. How could he explain it to the younger men who felt only cold, calculating emotions. Focused entirely on how to move themselves forward, how could they hope to understand a feeling like this?

With a groan, Ian took another drink of the calming liquid, though he didn’t feel much calmer. He looked around his office, eying his possessions and trophies. The partners, leaders of the illustrious Centre, were allowed personal objects, photographs, collectibles and signs of their success. It added to their image of superiority and leadership. It all meant nothing to Ian, though. He wasn’t happy with all of it.

Oh, he put on a front that he did. He had to, or he’s suffer the consequences. An involuntary shudder ran through him at the thought of that. The leaders were meant to appear fearless, but one thing scared them above all else - C-19.
It wasn’t only the occasional screaming coming from a criminal or otherwise about to be punished victim that frightened Ian concerning room C-19 and the monster within named after its prison cell. Ian, as well as the rest of the partners, knew what the creature was capable of, though they couldn’t understand how he did it. Their top scientists could never understand, even if they were allowed to hypothesize and examine it. Of course, they were kept docile with meaningless, repetitive lab and paper work.

“We just can’t have anyone thinking freely!” Ian said aloud, banging a closed fist on the top of his desk. He believed that sentiment, even though it went against his nature. His greatest fear was that his partners would someday learn his true nature, how he abhorred the work they did and the lives they destroyed.

But he also knew that it was completely necessary for the survival of the human race. So he must continue pretending to be a hardened, stalwart and sometimes cruel leader. For the good of the world, he would, but his thoughts drifted back to the security tape he had just witnessed. The camera in Patient 1138’s room recorded Dr. Therice’s first visit and fed its line into Ian’s office, only a few minutes behind the time the meeting occurred.

When Ian watched Kan press a communicator button, he knew at that moment a nurse would be in the room at that very moment, checking the patient’s stats. Ian was just as surprised as Dr. Therice that the patient had woken, and he also wondered what this could mean and what they’d learn from her.

Until he could read Dr. Therice’s report, he had to feign ignorance of the situation, as the scientists weren’t quite aware of the degree of which they were under surveillance. So for the time being, Ian focused on what else could be done. Glancing at his schedule for the day, he grimaced. He was due for a visit to C-19.

It seemed like no matter what he did, Ian’s thoughts returned that the monstrosity. He wondered if his fate always led him to the thing. Ian took one last sip of liquor, replaced his glass and the bottle, and prepared himself for the room. Even for someone who was not to be a victim, it could be a terrifying experience.
