Chapter Three
“Are you enjoying yourself, Mi Amore?”

I gasped, choked on the glass of water I was sipping and coughed. “Are you kidding!” I glanced around in awe at the twinkling lights, and sucked in a deep. Floral scents of rose, lilac, and lavender assaulted my senses, and I smiled in comfort. Music played softly in the background, and a string of Chinese party lanterns hung in a row above my head, giving a warm glow. The walls were painted to resemble a garden, and in the center of the room, a gazebo was built, and a band played from it’s center.

“I’ve never even been to a place like this, let alone to dine.” I set the water down, sure that I’d slosh it everywhere if he asked another obvious question. “This is amazing!”

Aidan grinned. “I’m glad you approve. I bought this place several years ago.”

         “You OWN this!”

         “Mmm, It called to me.”

“You mean it called to your wallet.” I couldn’t help but tease him.

“I came with a friend, and decided I had to have it.”

         “A female friend.”

“Yes.” He leaned back in his seat and gave her a knowing nod. “Are your jealous?”

“No, why would I be?” Yes! Of course, you dumbass! Sure, I’d only met the guy less than twenty four hours ago, but he couldn’t expect to be able to spout of promises about forever, and not make me want to strangle any other girl who might threaten that. I mean, yeah I didn’t know him well, and he might turn out to be a jerk, but for the moment he was MY jerk, and I wanted him all to myself.

“Good, because the other woman is my sister. “

And now I felt stupid. Congratulations! “I told you, I wasn’t jealous.”

He smiled. “I’m afraid I can’t say the same. I am filled with rage that that other demon was anywhere near you.”

         “Nothing happened.”

         “But it could have.”

         “But you said-”

“I know. But any demon can claim you during this period. You belong to me, but as you are not a demon, you are able to choose another. I however cannot. So long as you remain un-mated, any demon can offer for you, and you have the option to accept.”

“You said there was no choice.”

“Not for me.” He took a drink from his crystal glass, then set it down tentatively. “I didn’t want you to get it in your head to choose someone else before you were aware of the circumstances, and I admit, I have a lot of things to do right now, and I will not be able to be as attentive as I should be, the thought has occurred that you could choose another.”

“That why you sent Marc! It wasn’t cause you were afraid I would be killed, you wanted to make sure I didn’t choose anyone else!”

“I…” Aidan swallowed, looking decidedly nervous. “It was for your safety, but I had to make sure you knew the truth as well. The truth is…I don’t have time to guide you through this, and nay demon who decides to woo you, can. And I wouldn’t be able to stop him, and I couldn’t stop you either.”

“But I don’t understand. If a demon has but one Beloved, why would they waste it on another demons mate?”

“Someone who is as powerful, or more so than me, would take you to torture me, to gain power. They wouldn’t need to keep your forever, just long enough.”

         “Long enough, for what?”

“It doesn’t matter. Would you like dessert?”

         “Tell me.”

         “It’s not important.”

         “Aidan.”

He sighed. “Without a mate to help bind our powers, a demon’s power will become to powerful for them to handle. They will lose control, and destroy everything within their reach. Everything. A demon’s enemies can use that against them. If you were to mate another demon, even for a while, just long enough for me to be consumed, they would accomplish my destruction. Then they would be free to find their own mates.”

“So if we don’t mate, you will eventually destroy yourself?”

Aidan nodded.

“Wow, no pressure.” I chugged the rest of my water, then stood. Needing movement to distract me from the heavy burden, that had just dropped onto my shoulder. “Dance with me.”

“Of course.” He’d stood with me, but had remained unmoving while I decided what I wanted to do. Clearly I’d startled him, but he bounced back easily, because he didn’t hesitate to take my hand, and lead me out onto the floor near the gazebo.

Of course he danced as well as he looked. I couldn’t help but be comforted by the feel of his hands on me, even if they were above my hip, and on my hand. The music was slow, forcing us to remain close, but somehow he seemed to get us closer, until I was laying my head on his shoulder, and listening to the beat of his heart. Was that weird? I didn’t think so, but then again, I didn’t have much experience with men, and Kelly seemed to have a different once each night, so it couldn’t be so bad to want him. I mean, I’d already known him longer, than Kelly knew some of the men she’d slept with. That was a good thing right? I wasn’t really sure why I was worried anyway. My father wasn’t exactly around to do anything, and my mother would only cheer me on, and ask me how it was afterwards. There was no filter with her, but even so, no one would care but me. And did I care? I didn’t know yet. Right now, there was nowhere else I’d rather be. In this moment I could pretend like the whole world was happy, safe, and warm. Just like me.

         “Thank you.”

         “For what?”

“Dancing with me.” The song ended, and I couldn’t hold back a yawn.

         “Come, you need rest.”

         “I slept last night, remember?”

         “Not well.”

         “He EVEN told you THAT!”

“Just that he could hear you tossing and turning, and that you were up before the sun. Did I upset you so much?”

“It wasn’t you, it was…everything. I have a lot of my mind.” And Damned if I didn’t yawn again, right there on the dance floor, in front of everyone…all two people, excluding the waiter.

“Not a popular place is it?”

“Not at three thirty in the morning,”

“Three thirty! But we left at Nine!”

He grinned. “Then you’ve had a good time?”

         “An excellent time!”

“Good. Now let’s get you home.”

I nodded. How had I lost track of time so easily? Sure, we’d talked, but not that long. And we’d eaten, but it hadn’t taken us hours to eat. And the movie had been over before midnight. Could I have really, just lost track of time?”

         “Ready?”

I nodded, and yawned once more. Damn I had to stop that. I tried to muffle the sound, but he only chuckled and led me out the door, nodding to the maitre d’ as we left. I smiled, tried not to yawn, and barely managed to make it to the car before losing what remained of my waning energy.

*          *          *          *          *          *

“What time is it?” I glanced at the alarm, sure that it was still the early hours of morning, and grimaced. Already it was past noon, and Aidan was nowhere to be found. I padded cautiously out to my living room to find that the mugger was gone as well, and my only companion was a German Shepard, who was napping on my suede sofa.  “Good morning, Pup, where is everyone?”

The thief left early, and Aidan had work to do.”

         “Why didn’t anyone wake me?”

“You looked tired. Aidan had to carry you in last night. He said you passed out on the way home.”

Well damn. I groaned. “Awesome, great first impression.”

“You might want to put pants on, Kid.”

         “Why, you’re a dog.”

“Who can turn into a man, but that’s not why. Aidan mentioned he might be back, and even though I work for him, it might be best to give you a few advantages. And appearing mostly naked in front of him, is most definitely a disadvantage.”

“Depends on what advantage I want. If I wanted to control him, appearing half naked would most definitely be to my advantage. If I wanted to make up for say…falling asleep on our date. Then no pants, would be a treat. But if say, I happened to be less than bold enough to pull it off, and not nearly as sexy as most the girls in the world, then you’re right. I need pants.”

“Don’t sell yourself short, Kid. You are one helluva looker. Don’t’ get me wrong, I’d fuck you in a heartbeat…if I wanted Aidan to chop of my balls. But I don’t, I’m not desperate enough to try either. You’re sexy as hell though, and anyone who tells your different is lying our their ass.”

Aww, and the fact that it came from a talking dog, was not weird at all. “Thanks, Pooch. Did you eat and everything, I’m thinking of going out.”

“I ate. But I can eat again.”

Marc stood up, his tail wagging. “You know, this might be easier if you were human form. Leaving you out, tied to a bike rack is not exactly my idea of fun. And besides, wouldn’t you like to eat at a table like a normal person, and not in a bowl on the floor?”

“First, We’re are not normal, second of all, I am under strict orders to remain in this form while in your presence. And at the risk of losing all that I love, I will stay this way until Aidan says I no longer have to. Nice try though.”

“Yeah, sure. I’ll talk to Aidan about that.”

The dog nodded, but said nothing, and I went back to my bedroom to shower, and change.
