Blog for the WDC birthday Bash. |
| Maria slips into a restless sleep. There's a susurration in the shadowy corners of her dreaming mind. In the dream, there is a room. Inside stands a woman. Little by little, she eats away at the shadows, consuming them. To Maria, this woman represents nothing; her eyes are empty, and her soul is dank and old and rancid. The Nothing creaks a smile. She reaches with a languid hand. Maria flinches and whispers, 'What the hell?' This doesn't feel like a normal dream. The Nothing's smile becomes wolfish. She reaches out again. Maria continues to back away. 'Oh, for god's sake! Will you stop moving?' The Nothing snaps irritably, startling Maria. 'W-Why?' 'So I can get the whole possession thing over with,' The Nothing clarifies. 'Wait. What. Possession?' 'Duh, I'm in your mind. You broke me free after years of imprisonment blah blah. Now sit still whilst I take over, thanks.' 'But why?' 'Hello? I need a body. Right now you're in it. One mind too many, darling.' 'But this is my body!' Maria explodes. 'I don't think so.' The Nothing's grin turns into a frown. 'And could you stop thinking of me as a Nothing? I'm a something, you know.' Maria winces as The Something rustles through her mind. The feeling of something old, rotten and evil scraping along her subconscious makes her shudder. 'Very roomy; don't use your brain much do you? What a surprise. Could do with a spring clean, but yeah, I'll take this, thanks.' Maria grimaces. She dimly recalls the sparkling necklace she picked out of the gutter earlier. 'Yep, I was in that necklace,' The Something confirms. 'By the way, I take offence to the whole rotten, old and evil stuff. And The Something? Jesus Christ woman. Just stick with Ilessa.' A sibilant chuckle rings through Maria's mind. 'Say bye-bye now.' 'No. No! Hang on. I'm not standing for this. You're in my mind. My mind!' 'Love, I'm four hundred years old, and I've been tortured for most of it. Give me a break.' 'Oh,' Maria says. There is a pause. Then she mentally shakes herself. 'Oh! But that doesn't give you a right to take over me!' 'Guess not. I apologise,' Ilessa cackles sarcastically. 'Want me to ask nicely instead?' Maria dances out of reach of Ilessa's grasping, tendril- like fingers with a thought. 'Hey, you better stop doing that. It's really annoying you know,' Ilessa huffs. 'Can't exactly finish the job if you won't let me get all touchy-feely with every nook and cranny.' 'This is my mind,' Maria says, in a small voice. 'Not for long,' Ilessa purrs, wearing a psychotic smirk. It soon vanishes when she realises Maria is waking up. She can only watch in silence as Maria fades out of sight. Maria wakes up, shivering. Just a dream. You think so, Huh? A ghostly giggle echoes in the back of her mind. Just fall asleep once more, and you'll see how much of a dream this really is... 500 words. |
