Green Promise



I cupped my hand
and watched
as stunted growths,
tender sprouts,
and frilly newborn leaves
all climbed upward
to the light.

Jealous of their certitude,
I plunged into the soil
and commenced to fashion
my own strong roots.

The ground is rocky.
The rain is cold,
but, I know that
growing takes a while.

One day, I believe,
I'll rise up,
spread my leaves,
and produce
bright yellow blossoms
to share with the world.

Will you be patient
And carefully watch?
Will you hold me up
and cup me tenderly
inside your open hand?
